NUFC Transfer Rumours

Recommended Posts

My opinion on Calvert-Lewin is I don't rate him very highly, but I can see why Howe would want him (PL experience, hard worker, physical presence), and with him being available "on a free" and seemingly the worst of his injuries behind him I wouldn't be adverse to bringing him in provided the signing on fee and wages reflect that he would come in as a squad option. I would expect Howe to get the best out of someone like him, like he has numerous others and in a way I do think it makes sense to bring in someone with experience to play second fiddle to Isak as opposed to some costly prospect who will want loads of game time. A lot will depend also on how Howe and the coaching staff see Osula developing. If they think he can become the real deal it wouldn't make sense to bring in competition for him that will even further restrict the minutes he can get. The main thing is that whatever we do needs to make sense financially. As ever, the club have earned the trust to make the decision and whatever they decide will more likely than not end up being the correct decision. Many of us, me included, thought getting Gordon for 45-ish million was madness at the time. Scroll forward a year and a bit later and he's one of the best wingers in the league easily worth double what we paid for him.

Very difficult to buy back-up strikers who know that they’re not playing in a 1-striker system. I don’t know non-English football well enough to know anymore, but it can’t be an easy sell to someone who knows they’re behind Isak and without much prospect of usurping him.

Still a big if, but Howe has Jacob Murphy currently performing as one of the most effective right wingers / wide forwards in European football.

I agree it's not fair to say that DCL is injury prone but he did have one pretty bad knee injury - and he's a player whose game was based entirely around a physical profile. Good leap, an aerial presence in and around the box and pretty quick. Not a technically accomplished player - indeed rarely seems to strike the ball cleanly.

Don't think he's ever looked quite the same since the injury. He'd be a rebuilding job and not sure that's worth the hassle.

Getting a player in whose happy to be back up CF to a guaranteed starter is difficult admittedly.

He's in the catacombs of the Jesmond Dene hotel along with the decomposed corpse of Tranquillo Barnetta.

Season after season, DCL is one of the league's biggest underachievers when comparing goals to xG. He goes though some unbelievably bad streaks.

If Howe thinks he can fix that, fair play, that's quite some confidence

I don’t think it comes down to preferring Osula. We need three strikers. Osula is raw AF and, let’s be honest, has very unimpressive numbers to this point. The second guy needs to be a different profile, more experienced for sure.

It's a good point you make about the back up striker needing to be a different profile of player. There's issue with that as well though, if they are too different then you risk having to change alot tactically if Isak gets injured for any length of time but then equally you need something different to come off the bench if it's not working for Isak.

DCL is the obvious one to point to and say he'd provide something very different than Isak but someone like Jonathan David would be perhaps allow us to swap him in without much adaptation.

FWIW I don't see us getting David in, even for free, surely he'd realise he's not taking Isak spot in the team so he'd not be playing every week.

DCL is a dud and any serious club should be nowhere fucking near him.

Thankfully it’s Football insider saying that we are interest, so it’s 100% bullshit.

We tried to buy him in the summer the rumour is credible on that basis imo.

This deal would have pros and cons.

Do we know that? Could easily have been more bollocks back then.

The DCL rumours have been very persistent, but I think our interest may be dropping, purely on the basis of what I've seen of Osula. He may not turn out to be quite as good as DCL (who at his injury-free peak was a very tidy player) but I like what I've seen so far. He certainly looks quick and strong. Above all, he has what I always like to see in a young player - that belief that he belongs out there on the pitch and is going to make things happen.

I watched him closely against Villa away earlier in the season

He was excellent.

i have never been his biggest fan but watching that game showed me he is a very good player if integrated into a proper team structure that create chances.

He made 4 or 5 excellent runs , great in the air , hold up play was superb and ver strong , he scored too

I just think he lacks confidence at times with Everton
