We could really do with a top class midfielder like McCallister, or Szoboszlai. Keep Isak and he’ll come round by September once window shuts, but after Wissa is sealed this is where we should be going big.

a top class midfielder in addition to Bruno, Tonali and Joelinton? To come as a rotation option? It’s not gonna happen. We’re trying to upgrade on Longstaff.

If we sell Isak it makes sense to put some of the surplus money into a younger CM who is about as good as the Bruno/Tonali/Joelinton trio. With the amount of games we have we could easily rotate the four of them throughout the season and still have minutes left to give Miley.

Look how many games we have. Not all of them are gonna be able to play every game. Any midfielder coming in will play a good 25 games minimum. If that's not good enough, challenge them to prove they are worth it.

He’s turning 29 in a few days. I would guess that next year is the last year we’ll get good money for him. We don’t have PSR room, we have to be ruthless with who we sell.

We won't have any psr issues this season after two seasons of what will probably be profit or there abouts.

Even if we needed to do something like this, this is not the season to do it in.

We have long term psr issues due to our revenue, and regularly selling players could be a way to mitigate that if we wind up in a similar situation to a couple of years ago, but there's no need in this window

We should have a genuine alternative to Joelinton, where absolutely in the mud creativity wise. If Isak does fuck off we’re even more predictable in attack. The last thing we need is another midfield workhorse, where crying out for some technical ability in the final third.

A top class midfielder backs themselves to dislodge Joelinton. As much as he’s a great icon for us, he’s overall play is so limited to where we want to get to as a club.

Totally agree. Hoping we have changed the plan a little to be able to flex more on a CM after saving money on Ramsdale and possibly Thiaw.

It's not going to happen if we keep Isak, we can agree on that. But if we sell him and get a lot of room to upgrade the team that is the place I would start.

I dont want to replace Joelinton, but I do want an alternative to him. He is irreplaceable in certain type of games, but goes missing in others. Has been racking up quite a few injuries lately aswell.

We need to stop focusing on the best first XI anyways. It's not going to be set in stone with the amount of games we are going to have.

Some fair points made. I’m all about the squad, I never wanted to sell Barnes because I knew he’d be crucial at some point and then last season, that run of games, he was.

of course I’d love to have Joelinton for the hard games and a Modric clone for the easy games, but I just cannot see it. We are struggling badly to attract really top talent, and when we do they will expect to play every game. Rudoni is the only semi concrete midfield link we’ve had all summer.

sort out the strikers and see what’s left I guess.

If we got rid of Isak then I’d want the following this summer:

Thiaw 30

Wissa 35

Paqueta 40

Xavi Simons 50

Samu 60

65m net spend, 110 including Elanga too

would really kit out the squad and potentially help us to challenge

Don't think we are struggling that badly to attract players. Sure a lot of (most) players would rather prefer City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, but other than that we are a highly attractive place to go to. Don't think Wissa f.ex expects to start every game.

If it wasn't for the Isak situation we'd literally just be taking our time getting Wissa signed and a midfielder before the deadline and I think 90% of fans would have been chuffed to bits with how the window went.

I think the opposite to be honest. I'm happy with the business we have done but I think if you'd said Elanga, Wissa, Thiaw and Ramsdale at the start of the window most people would have scoffed and seen them as squad fillers rather than signings to boost the quality of the team. When we were chasing Pedro and Ekitike people were talking about them as Wilson replacements and still touting names like Gallagher and Guehi for the midfield and centre back. Trafford at various points over the last year seemed like a shoo-in.

After missing out on Trafford, I think Ramsdale is a smart addition on loan. He seems decent with his feet, probably not as commanding as Pope, but more agile than Dubravka and therefore an upgrade for a minimal outlay. Wissa is a nimble and hardworking forward and a better backup striker than I expected us to sign, but not cheap given his age and only recently prolific in front of goal. Elanga is a good Premier League winger but still looks pretty raw. I like the fact that we've doubled down on pace and pressing and directness down the flanks, but like many people I was initially warm to the idea of a more creative wide player. And I like Thiaw as a project, he seems to have all the tools to be a really good centre back, but that's one position where I thought we might splash the cash and look for an established leader or a top talent given Burn and Schar's age and Botman's fitness issues.

I think we will sign Wissa and Thiaw which will bring our spending to around £130 million with us still needing a midfielder. And I'm optimistic about all of those signings in isolation, but as a Champions League side I think it's decent rather than anything special.

need someone like Xavi Simons..

Surely Chelsea got enough players now

Would be an amazing signing. Not a chance we are going up against another big 6 club again this window without MAJOR and binding assurances from the player and club lol

For those suggesting Xavi Simons where would he fit in the system we play now? I'd argue we're fairly stacked at left wing (Gordon and Barnes) and we don't typically use an attacking midfielder.

I like him as a player, I think he does most of his good work in transition which suits us in some ways, less so in others.

He doesn't and he's way too expensive for us. It's wishful thinking which definitely has its place.

Considering he's been linked for a while I am surprised we've not gone for Rudoni yet. The club clearly aren't certain about him for whatever reason, else you'd think it would've been done by now. Feels like an easy one to get sorted if we really wanted to.
