There’s less defending to do at city but the defending is harder to do. At Newcastle we drop our line under pressure. We drop our line against good teams.

At City you’ll have to defend from the halfway line against Real Madrid. That’s what Tino is for.

I have a similar feeling to Isak re: Tino’s contract.  It should’ve been signed last year before he really established himself in the England setup and as a top defender in the league. When the top 6 realised we had stolen a march on them for Tino about 12-18 months ago.

The old leadership over leveraged on contract lengths with Isak and they left us in that position with Tino.  He’s still on ‘bought as a 21 year old coming from the champ’ money right? When a player seems content to be underpaid for a long period of time they are looking at moving.

We’ve not dealt with contracts well since Ashworth left.

I keep saying it.  Palmer signed  long deal with Chelsea.  But got a new contract (even longer) within 16 months of signing.  It’s to keep him sweet. When players improve their levels (Tonali, Hall, Tino) they need to be paid well even if they have 3-4 years left on their contracts.

So, if we'd given Isak a new contract last summer, would that have stopped him from leaving this summer?

I think you're making this too simple.

We could've given Tino a new contract last year, but would that stop him from wanting to go to Man City next summer? Same goes for Hall and all our best players. Gordon got a new contract, but do you really think if Liverpool came calling this past summer he wouldn't have pushed for the move?

As Newcastle fans, after the whole Isak thing, we should know by now that contracts and extensions mean squat if a bigger club comes knocking.

We just have to hope the player doesn't make a scene. If Isak doesn't go on strike, we'll probably get more than 125 for him or he would still be leading the line for us.

That goes for Tino, Hall and Tonali, they dont do an Isak then I think we get our valuation or they stay.

I think any player with a quarter of a brain will have noticed the reaction to the rats antics and would be aware it’s not a good idea to repeat them.

But he got the move he wanted, while getting rid of him was the right move, it has set a dangerous precedent in player power

I don’t think Isak’s antics are the reason for his current form.  He got the move and the money he wanted - the players are far more likely to take that view.  Kick up a stink and you’ll get a move to a bigger club on more money - if Isak flops, that’s on him.

When you agree a new contract everybody knows where they stand. It’s an opportunity to agree release clauses. Money etc.

The club didn’t know where it stood with Isak and that’s a big reason he left in the manner he left.

If we tried to get him to sign the season prior I think we end up in a better position than we are now. We either have him or he leaves in a better way.

You have underpaid players. Expect them to leave.

If we tried to get him to re sign the season before it would probably have come with a release clause less than what we actually got for him.

Not strictly true though is it, as the length remaining on the contract is directly proportional to the fee we can command. Yes we as fans are going to have to become used to player trading, I just hope actually having a club hierarchy in place going forwards means it’s not as drawn out and disruptive going forwards.

Why would he wanna leave?

He's guaranteed right back for years to come, the manager rates him just broke into the England setup, won a cup not long ago the fans love him.

Because at Man City he will have the chance to compete for the PL and CL, something which we are still a decent way off from realistically being able to do

In theory yes but city aren't back to the team that won the treble not long ago. Plus pep seems to ruin young talent after he's ingrained his keep it safe passing system into them.

Players will always go to whoever pays them the most . They say it's about ambition etc but we have lost out on players who would rather play for a non champions league club than us if it means more money .

I mean all of us on here obviously want him to stay and continue to grow here, but let’s not forget what Pep did for a certain Kyle Walker, him leaving a fairly good Spurs side that were on the up at the time, didn’t exactly work out badly for him did it?

We have to be aware we're not yet at the top table in terms of wages we can offer etc. we don’t have to be happy about it, but denying that it’s the current reality is equally daft.

This. It's fanciful to think a player will stay somewhere lovely for £150k a week when he can go somewhere, slightly elevated, for £300k

Few exceptions and a problem we'll have for the foreseeable.

Players usually back their own talent - I’d imagine that if Livramento went to Man City it is because he’d expect to be good enough to hold a place in the team.

They’re light years ahead of us, he’d be on double money (at least) and more or less guaranteed winning big trophies with a move there (if it happens).

We’re not at their level; we’re not even close.  I also wouldn’t view any of the current squad as being here for the ‘long haul’ - to grow you need to sell regularly and sell well.

Tino may also have longevity due to injury in the back of his mind.

Anyone who thinks that Tino wouldn't leave for City is being naive.

More money, more chance of trophies, better players than us and their main right back is a centre mid so he would fancy himself to be first choice. For him it is a no brainer and we have to accept that, at least for the short to medium term, some players will leave for 'bigger' clubs.

Ask yourself this - if you were playing for Aston Villa for £80k a week and Man City came and offered you double your money, would you go?

There's not much longevity.

He should already be a multi millionaire. How much longevity do you need at that level of pay ?

I know it’s short enough as it is. It just maybe in the back of his mind with his injury record and that that could play a factor in his decision making. Although double your money and trophies is quite the incentive. Be sad to see him go but if we get maximum coin from Man City and reinvest we’ll be recycling the money into having a stronger all round squad. As said we can’t keep these players indefinitely as we are, but great that we can at least maximise our profit to put back into the squad. No Ashley money trousering going on here anymore.

Said it in the match thread, but I can't believe how many times he was beaten today. Looked like he was running through treacle a lot of the game. Really poor

Think he needs a week off but we've nobody to rest him for.

Has he played every game since he came back from his 2 months out?
