If the club thinks he is likely to leave, I would be signing his replacement next month.  We need a back up anyway and Trippier might also be off in the Summer.  It would give the new player time to acclimatise.  We can’t have a repeat of the Isak situation last Summer.

Until (and this is hard to see when) we have a wage structure that can compete with the top clubs (and by definition an ability to spend in align with top clubs to maintain CL qualifications) we will always be at risk of losing top players. Thats just a the reality of it.

Champions league football is key again, i can't see that this season

We're 4 (possibly 3) points off a Champions league place after playing most of the season so far without our full backs or a CF.

I think we have a good chance.

Even the nuance that our best players are likely to leave in their prime makes me wonder

By 2030 according to Hopkinson.

Villa are 8 points in front of us and i cant see them staying 3rd, plus  the others will strengthen again in January.

£85m at least for him if we’re going to sell.

England international, just turned 23 and is one of the best in the league. Injury concerns noted, but that’s the risk you take.

Conversations need to start being had with him and his agent now, no promises, just an expectation that if City meet our valuation, we won’t stand in your way.

You’d like to think with Wilson and Hopkinson now in post these types of situations will be dealt with far better.

As we will strengthen. Look at the difference Tino and Hall have made. If Wissa finds his Brentford form I see no reason why Champions league isnt achievable.

Think it will take a freak Leicester type season to ever win the PL. We don't seem capable or willing to close the financial gulf needed to sustainably challenge.

A cup final (inc. EL and CL) 3 or 4 times a decade is a sustainable prospect through, with a CL campaign once every 2-3 years.

Tino has to be unsellable and we need to give him a strong contract. It’s not just he’s a good RB that can still progress, it’s he’s also a good LB. It’s two positions covered of quality, so when you are assembling a squad, you technically only need 3 natural full backs so funds/wages can be tied up elsewhere.

Should’ve had this new deals signed within a month of the league cup final at the latest.  As you say quality in 2 positions.

If we can go back to back in the CL with string windows between - we can majorly close the gap.

If Villa had finished 5th instead. They would’ve had a serious top 5 level squad to go again.  That could change everything if they then go 3x in a row in the CL even if they have to sell.

Injuries and maybe inexperience stopped us going back to back last time. Organisational dysfunction and the transfer window will likely cost us this time.  We need a 3 year period where everything aligns for us.

Of there's one thing the Isak debacle taught us, it's that CL alone is not good enough to keep the very top players at the club.

Yep. All we can really do until that changes is get the best fee we can if he wants to leave, and then put that money towards the next hotshot young RB. Assuming Chelsea haven't already signed him.
