I really like Barnes at times, have to admit.

Sometimes he looks a bit like a kid playing with bigger lads, but he's so elegant on the ball and has a ruthless instinct to do damage every time he can.

I hope he gets a bit of a run on the left now.  He drifts out of games and at times is a bit of a nothing player.  But he comes alive in the final third.  He's always trying to get it out his feet for a shot, or work space for a cross.  Seems more than happy to cross on his left this season and all, which is helping.  Murphy is far less polished yet more effective in some ways on the other side.  Bit he is another who is always looking to GET THE BALL IN THE BOX (Gary BirtlesTM).  It would be nice to have some creativity from out wide.

He is probably still best as an impact sub.  But seeing as the starting left winger is having no impact at all and is apparently injured.  Barnes deserves another go.

If Gordon ends up being out for my length of time, he really needs to take this chance to really perform if given a run of starts.

Feels like he always done ‘OK’ when starting, but never any better than that. The vast majority of games in his NUFC career that he’s really impacted/impressed in, seem to have been as a sub.

he was a major reason for us getting Champions League last season. He was great when he replaced Gordon.

Barnes is a much better player than Gordon around the box. Just has an instinct for popping up in the right place and makes really good decisions too.

His biggest flaws are that he can go missing for long period (which nobody will care about if he produces) and his all around build up play is pretty average and safe.

Over the course of 38 games, if played consistently id back him to out perform our other wingers, just on numbers.

He should be our starting left winger for a few games now. They only way Gordon should come back in, is if he looks back to his best from the bench.

That post-cup final run, where he scored in three successive games, was definitely his best run as a starter, especially the Man Utd game. But even then we’re talking 4 or 5 games max, before he sort of drifted a bit towards the end of the season.

I want him to do that for longer, more consistently. He’s probably the best finisher at the club, and I genuinely think he can get 15+ goals a season (especially when we’re playing so many matches) if he finds a way to consistently influence games as a starter.

That's Not fair gordon got back in as the leftwing for no reason other than howe prefers him and Barnes got shunted to the right. Then his form dropped off.

Barnes is light weight, gets caught ball watching and goes missing, there’s a reason Howe picks Gordon ahead of him. A decent option off the bench, however it will be lambs to the slaughter on Sunday with him and Burn badly exposed unfortunately.

I still don't think Gordon's delivery from the right is that bad and obviously Barnes is a miles better finisher, at times last year it was almost like Gordon was stuck on the left so he didn't take the huff

Probably massively overthinking it and being a bit paranoid. But at times it has felt like Howe has indulged Gordon. Not subbed him, barely played him on the right (when Gordon did seem to sulk) and regularly started him. Even when in crap form. It has probably got the best out of him in the past.

But the fact he has been crap bar a 2-3 month spell since basically the start of last season. Is showing that whatever we or he is doing isn’t working and he shouldn’t be an automatic starter. Maybe a kick up the arse and having to fight for his place is what he needs.

Barnes should get a run now regardless of Gordon’s fitness. Even Elanga….. ok maybe that’s too far. But Wissa could be back soon’ish and he could play off the left no bother.
