That job is way beyond the manager remit.

We can't have eddie popping down and making sure the u8 are pressing properly.

You just know he does though [emoji38]

Based on nothing but my imagination, Eddie is a man who has an eye for detail and is meticulous in everything he does.
I’ve arbitrarily decided that Eddie is talking the Ferguson approach of running the whole caboodle, which given what he’s achieved so far is just fine with me.

Eddie knows he has all the leverage now doesn't he . Fair play to him.

Time to play the card, it’s now. Can’t argue against giving him the power if PIF are ready to increase the revenues and go all in. Better off doing it with Howe who genuinely could be a long term manager for next 6+ years and get us the title.

I think the positive but if this is that it sort of reaffirms the commitment the club and Eddie have to each other. I can’t see this being anything other than us backing him. From the playing side to the whole identity and togetherness of the club, Eddie sets the tone. I want recruitment to be shared with experienced football people, but ultimately with Eddie having the final say.

Yeah definitely. You essentially need another Howe in that position for when he eventually leaves, but then you'd also expect them to move with Howe.

I could see Nickson and Bunce working together in more prominent roles.

That's a shame. I still have absolutely no idea what either Mitchell or Ashworth even did, nor do I really have a clear idea of what a director of football even is.

I don't get the impression they're scouts, scouts work under them. We don't really need a "vision" set, Eddie has already established that and it's working perfectly. No idea what need we have for one at this time tbh.

It maybe that Eddie wants nothing but British players that will cost a lot more than foreign players thus reduces the numbers we can take to get the squad numbers up, ultimately though he will have to work with a DOF else we will be in trouble. Following his illness he's already stated that there's more to life than football,

My issue with it is the club has to be set up eventually to be able to operate independent of who the head coach is. I think it is almost impossible to set up the club that way while he's here, so it's a bit of a catch 22.

Yeah, it's a bit cake and eat it for me and a symptom of us doing things backwards; i.e. appointing the manager first. Which is why, as @Big River says, we're still in an era where these issues are partially accountable to the Ashley administration.

That said, I'm becoming increasingly doubtful about the concept at all. Do the top clubs operate like this? Or do the top clubs have their visionaries (whether you rate them or not) at the coal face, i.e. Pep, Klopp, Howe, Arteta? The DoF 'culture-setter' role seems more applicable to (and more successful at) medium-sized clubs at best, to me.

If we're gonna have a Howe then I'd argue we just go all in on the traditional 'manager is the most influential person at the club' structure. It's worked fine so far. Appoint a TD and a head coach together, whenever the time comes.

Not fussed about him leaving in terms of transfers as they look after themselves to a certain extent through our scouting system and role of agents.

More concerned that we need someone in place to oversee infrastructure development, academy, medical department and women's team, etc.

Thats my concern.  You need someone in that role for a number of years before anything comes to fruition.

I’m happy with Howe having a lot of control. As long as we sign more technical ability and guile into the team. Don’t want a “direct” runner at RW.

Hope we sign some Usain Bolt regen for the right wing slot, if only to annoy you

Problem with Howe assuming all the power is just genuine workload surely. It's all very well but I can't be alone in looking jealously at how other clubs snap up players quickly early in window etc, snap up obscure talent for the future. I want someone working on that full time, Howe should have say and definitely veto fine but doesn't a totally great use of everyones time...
