Needless to say he scored and got MOTM! I'd swap him for Elanga mind. Edited October 18, 2025 by Wallsendmag
Doctor Zaius
I remember telling a Forest fan that Howe has a proven track record improving players. They told me Nuno has already improved him massively, largely by playing him in a system that works for him. To me, you spend 60m on a player that you can take to the next level. Not one that needs to play in a counter attacking side to recapture the form he showed at Forest. Howe has wanted him for ages, so he must see something that he can work with, he must have plan for him. He knows more than any of us will ever know but it just looks like a baffling signing at the moment.
sparkzter
If Howe wanted him for ages he’ll need to get a tune from him pretty sharpish as the 55 million pound fee for him is looking hellish.
ExiledGeordie
There’s still time for him to improve and he looks low on confidence but it’s a bad signing so far. As others have said if you drop 55m on a player you expert far more than what he’s shown so far. She just doesnt look like he can influence a match often enough, poor touch, poor deliveries. Even yesterday in the one situation he should thrive in other counter he slowed things up and checked back. However has his work cut out here at the moment. La Parka
Might end up being the biggest flop we've signed. He's just not suited to us. If he was around when we were not dominant in games a few years ago (ironically when we were chasing him) he'd have been ideal. Unfortunately his weaknesses (first touch, blinkers) are exacerbating our struggles with the ball. He's not anywhere near Murphy right now. He might even be sulking with the Isak situation. I'm not sure we will see him come good here, and signing him baffled me in the summer and it looks worse today. As I said in the Park Seung Soo thread - I'd take a signing like that over massively overpriced premier league proven average players any day. CallumG6
Fully trust Eddie to get him firing sooner rather than later.
Roids
Who could have predicted that a pace merchant who benefited from playing into open space would struggle. Don't worry, Eddie will fix him, he'll fix them all
Izakaya
Might as well have signed Allan St Maximin back tbh.
Ronson333
There is a lot of good wingers around at the moment, it’s not like trying to find a Decent striker. If we have to sell and find a replacement in the summer, we will and there will be options available. we won’t get £55m back though, much less on current form. Sibierski
The only positive in the Elanga signing is his age right now, could be 2 years down the line and he steps up, and he’s 25 and we get 3 peak seasons where there’s value still in the player to extend or sell. Just, it’s a long time to get that. Whole point our fans push back on signing lower price players who are more unknown, is we can’t afford to wait for them to learn / progress, so when we’re signing players for £40m+, we need them to hit the ground by November/December at the latest, otherwise, what was the value in the signing? Sandrotastico
My long term gripe is that we lack any variety in the team, especially on the wings - it's all blood and thunder, very little guile and technicality. That was my worry when we signed Elanga, he's a pure speed merchant, but he looks so lost and confused and seems to be invisible for huge parts of the game. Gordon for all his work rate, rarely offers much end product - so we're playing with little on the wings right now. Elanga makes Murphy look like a 55m winger, which makes you question the signing. Well every other club seems to get their money back on their failed signings. That said I'm not writing him off, way too early.
Andy
No doubt he will improve in his time here and be useful in certain games, but given the amount of time we've spent knowing we needed to strengthen this position, we really wanted that RW signing to be of the level of Botman, Bruno, Tonali (post-ban), Isak, Trippier, even Pope, where they noticeably and instantly improved the level of the first team. I love Murphy but he will never have the consistency to be a top 4 winger over the long term. Elanga looks like he will be in the same boat to me. The player we brought in needed to be a "this is what we've been missing" type, not a "this is basically what we've already got but maybe worse at the moment" type. Sibierski
Mbuemo was the clear number 1 target, and he’d have been that. When it was clear it was Man Utd he was off too, Elanga as 2nd choice was a completely different type of profile.

The Prophet
Murphy has had three and a half years under Howe. He knows what Howe wants from him and our patterns of play like the back of his hand. His team mates know where he'll be and what he'll do with the ball. It's not an ideal start from Elanga, but by all accounts, Howe demands a lot from his players and some take longer than others to adjust to that. If we're sat here this time next season and he's still putting in highly erratic performances then I might start to think we got this one wrong. This is all true but doesn't excuses the diabolical ball control hes shown as well as poor decision making in general. He often looks like he's got no idea what his actual strength is. I'm certain he will improve but it's been a poor start and we are talking about 55m here.

It could be a technical thing, but it could also be a confidence thing. It seems he was told to keep it simple at Forest, that might be what he needs here. AyeDubbleYoo
I definitely think it’s mental. Adjusting to a new club, making a step up where you might believe you have to try more and push more stuff you wouldn’t do before. Something like that. If Jacob Murphy can be made effective for us then surely Anthony Elanga can. Edited October 19, 2025 by AyeDubbleYoo

I'm assuming Howe would have been aware of his technical shortcomings before we signed him, but thought his attacking strengths more than made up for it. That's why yesterday was particularly disappointing. He seemed unsure of himself and didn't go for the jugular. We need to come to terms with him losing the ball occasionally, as long as he's getting at opponents and making things happen.
andycap
Confidence looks shot to shit to me like yesterday when he broke and cut back instead of going at his man isn't usually how he plays. Wonder if it's the system he's struggling with or maybes been in and out the team.
AyeDubbleYoo
Was it Baleba running back with him? Maybe the only player on the pitch he might think he can’t just run past.
