Newcastle United (4) 2-0 (0) Arsenal - 05/02/2025

I've always liked a back 5 apart from, of course, when it muddles a team who just can't do it. Last nights version was exemplary and Schar's pressing Rice when the started things was a master stroke and Rice's frustration and petulance should have ended with a red for the challenge on Bruno.

That was about as loud as I've ever experienced in SJP since the very old days of a tin roof on the Leazes End. It was very feisty pre match under the Milburn stand as large groups of Arsenal fans walked up having plenty to say for themselves and that feistiness transferred nicely into the stadium by kick off time.

One of those nights which will live long in the memories of those fortunate enough to be there.

I thought Rice had already been booked, and the ref bottled the 2nd yellow, never mind a straight red. But the fact that late challenge on Bruno wasn't even deemed a first booking was crazy!

From the BBC re: Murphy

Quote

In 80 minutes on the pitch he registered two successful passes, from five attempted, among 14 touches - with one of which he effectively sent Newcastle to Wembley after 19 minutes.

Amazing stat.

Has the footballing world now gotten over spaffing themselves silly at the idea of some nonce getting paid to pop out the dugout every corner and tell the players to get it in the mixer btw?

Class that, never expected it to be so easy. Arsenal never turned up and we did.

One of the best atmospheres I've experienced at SJP. Class, and especially great to be standing in the corner. Never heard Arsenal all night - couldnt tell if we just drowned them out

Despite how great, real example of the damage VAR has done for me. I let myself go for the first disallowed goal, confident he was onside from my angle. For the two goals there was a cautiousness to my celebration after being burned, good, but not that all out feeling.

The 'it must be the ball' chant was the perfect combination of gloating and taking the piss. loved it.

Well done everyone, I really felt it made a difference.

Very stressed now about getting into Wembley.

Same. I ran down the steps to the walkway below, bounced along to the entrance to the concourse, gave a lass I used to sit near a smacker on the lips and a hug then returned to my seat bug-eyed to find out it was being checked.

Took some ribbing about it, so when Murphy scored I made a point of standing silently until the kick-off was taken to restart the game then I went daft by myself.

Fuck me we were good last night. Both on the pitch and in the stands. The pre-kick off displays, especially when the crowd are up for it are something to behold.

It feels like this team has crossed the boundary between hoping they can win, and knowing they can win. I've witnessed us in five domestic finals, and it's the first time I've detected that.

Got talking to some Arsenal fans in the pub last night (they left when the 2nd went in). Nothing but good things to say about the team and city and they want us to win the cup now.
