Glad for the win but we need to sort these three or four players not turning up kind of performances.

Isak Bruno Murphy looked pretty poor yesterday but the rest managed to keep us in it.

All 3 absolutely key in the first goal

I thought Brentford looked a very well coached outfit who made it difficult for us but also think they didn't really look like scoring outside of winning penalties. Classic laptop side filling up the PL.

Overall a good win, thought we were excellent in the first 20 minutes but didn't make it count, didn't help that Isak was pretty off it, nothing he tried really came off, even the goal itself was a slice of fortune but we'll forgive him and we'll take it all day long.

Thought the two fullbacks were brilliant once again, the recent improvement in Livramento is very much welcomed as I think a fair few were getting a bit concerned about his poor form before the final, Tonali was superb and Joelinton was a force defensively and going forward, unfortunately Bruno's performance was of very low standard, constantly giving the ball away and generally just making the wrong decisions, seemed a little bit overly emotional and fired up to me, which was causing him to rush everything he did.

Enjoying seeing Barnes contribute a lot more, seemed to be involved in most things we did going forward and was contributing far more defensively, may be controversial but Gordon doesnt come straight back in for me, might bring back the best in Gordon too if he has to fight for his place.

Top 4 is very much on, but we need to be consistent.

Was the penalty a definite? To me it looked like he ran into popey.

It’s one of those that shouldn’t be a penalty but always is. Of course the forward is running into the keeper, is never interested in getting the ball and likely the ball was going out of play anyway. But sadly it’s always given.

Looking at the goal again, I think Tonali's comments of 70/30 were about right. He was running out of space, glanced up and saw only really Wilson in the box (there were two others on the edge), and made the intelligent split-second decision to hammer it in on goal, as a floated cross would have easily been claimed by Flekken.

It was a percentage ball. Did he mean to hit that postage stamp at the near post - no. Was it meant as a cross for a teammate - no. With the pace on the ball he was likely hoping for a defender to gamble, a mix-up or the keeper to spill it. It also had a slight chance of finding the net directly, which thankfully for us it did.

For that reason, in my opinion he deserves full credit for it. He played a cracking ball in with great technique and got a little lucky.

So many goals fall into this bracket, but only the spectacular get this type of discussion.

Weird game, Brentford were rubbish but we couldn’t put them away. And we were wasteful and sloppy at times. Thankfully we came through it.

The ease with which we handled Mbuemo might concern the recruitment department a bit.

The ease? He was constantly creating something. Put few very decent balls and one was headed away at the last moment by Tripps.

Likes to cut in to his left foot a bit too much.

I thought he was very quiet.

Looking at the Brentford penalty again. I don’t think it’s a penalty. Pope knows that Wissa is coming and so doesn’t make any action to try and collect with his hands, he takes a defensive stance. Wissa knows that if he runs across Pope when the ball comes in that Pope is going to be forced to come for it and he throws himself into Pope for the contact. Pope makes no attempt to impinge or stop Wissa, there’s no foul committed. Simulation by Wissa

Other one Damsgaard just chucks himself on the ground. Bruno’s contact is minimal if any at all.

Last one, Brentford player fouls Bruno.

Jesus Christ! You remember that but not the numerous times he lost the ball and even worse his two shocking tackles that could have led to penalties?

He does that every match and that’s his game. He wants a lot of the ball and with that comes losing it more some games than others.

Pope swatted at him to get the ball and Wissa embellishing his flop sold it. Pope had the angle covered and didn’t need to make contact. Silly from Pope to take the risk.

I mean he fucked up that chance pretty badly by not scoring or passing to Barnes earlier.

I thought he had a rare off night

That chance doesnt exist without what he did before it, and what he did before it is all my post was about, not the rest of game or any other part, just the movement of the ball in that one specific moment.

Sex.

Still can't believe their header a) didn't go in and b) didn't rebound to their two free players - literally right in front of me and was convinced it was top corner!

Great 3 points!

Mind you before tonali clagged that goal in I was worried. as we had no isak on the pitch Wilson doesn't look like scoring nowadays and brentford still had wissa mbeumo schade damsgard on the pitch. 😂

Wasn’t Isak’s best game, still had a goal and very nearly an assist. Wasn’t Murphy’s best game, another assist in the bag. Wasn’t Bruno’s best game, but worked it wide to Murphy rather than trying to thread through middle for the goal. Decent state of affairs when we can pick holes in players when they’re contributing to a win against a team that had won their last 5 away games on the trot and are no mugs.

I thought we did some things very well, but also very poor at times. Not entirely unexpected on this occasion really.

Having said that, I do think we in general need to improve when in possession of the ball, and our composure which goes missing at times during the games which makes us look a bit headless and out of control.  Sometimes we look ridiculously good when at it.

We are finding ways to win matches when far from our best. At West Ham the Monday before the Cup Final and now at home against a very good Brentford, we managed to take 6 points from 6 in spite of mediocre performances overall. I think that's the quality you associate with consistent winning clubs - how many matches have we watched where we've been done by Liverpool or someone similar despite outplaying them? We're developing the mentality you need when you want to consistently challenge for things. Everyone bar Tino and Sandro played at a level below their best and yet we won. I thought by that metric it was a positive night.

Thought Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento, Joelinton, Barnes & Tonali all played decent. Pope was decent bar his one very costly mistake. Isak & Murphy were dissapointing bar their goal. Wilson looked lighter on the feet than Isak ffs  Bruno looked like hes been living on kinder eggs since the cup final.

Think it's a positive sign that we can churn out 3 points despite our 2 key players not performing.

Was pleased to see Isak getting a mouthful off not only Barnes but Joelinton when he messed up the attack for a simple tap in for Barnes.

Still confused at Pope diving to the side Mbuemo never goes on penalties

It’s a 6-4 split over which side he’s gone with his 10 PL pens.
