Talk sport saying he's left the training camp to discuss his future as he wants to leave for champions League.

Obv they rejected a bid from Forrest but if player wants to leave, harder for them to ask for 40 mill plus now.

If we end up paying £45m for Wissa, then I wish we'd have launched the £60m Brighton wanted for Pedro as soon as the window opened, before Chelsea had their CWC income

Hindsight and all that. And they probably still would have outbid us etc etc

Whatever it is, just pay it in case he goes to Spurs. We need to speed things up, need midfield cover. No Longy, Miley still young and Willock is too unreliable. What's our plan if one of Joe, Bruno or Tonali go down? Five man defense? :undecided:

Fit for purpose, some might say.

He's a tricky one to value.

19 non - penalty goals last season and would fit us like a glove. Plus we're getting into desperation territory.

At the same he's 28 and has two years on his contract.

Good job it's not my money or my job to put a figure on these things.

Don't think Pedro ever wanted us, or to leave London this time round.

One theory as to why we've stopped going after European targets: transfers are much more about relationships than they are about scouting. It's 2025 and every club knows who the good "targets" in Europe are, the ones that get to the front of the line are people who have pre-existing relationships with the selling club that can help you get in there and negotiating before anyone else.

For all his footballing brilliance, I doubt Howe has extensive contacts with business-side executives at European clubs (or European agents), so it's more difficult for us to get on the phone with them or to get good deals. That's why it's important to have a well-regarded sporting director in modern football. These people all hang out in the same circles/attend the same conferences etc. The easiest way to get ahead on transfers is if you "know a guy."

I think there's also an element of players hitting the ground running, how many times have we seen Eddie hold players back until he's 100% satisfied they're ready to play his system? PL players offer a lower risk I'd guess.

I frankly don't know how any one of us is capable of doing any sort of reasonable evaluation as to what fees are "too much" or "too little."

We're not looking at the entire market landscape to determine what the asking price is for comparable players. We're not running the numbers on our PSR compliance to see how a 35m fee would affect us vs. a 40m fee. We're just guessing.

I can only really evaluate a transfer based on how successful the player is on the pitch. The fee is largely irrelevant. If the club paid it, I will go ahead and assume we can do so without ruining our books.

I wouldn’t say so. You look at the market and what similar, worse, better players have gone for and their circumstances (age, current, contract length, league they’ve played in etc) and then you look at our financial position and the fact we’ve not spent any money in three transfer windows and had to sell Minteh and Anderson and bring in a keeper who will never see the light of day with us and it’s pretty easy to take a stance on the finances

Hope seemed fairly confident we'd get our man during his last update, and as we all know he tends to report a negative/realistic (delete as appropriate) slant on nearly everything whilst the likes of Waugh, Puke etc get suckered into thinking things will all pan out for us.

Don't feel like he of all people would say that if there wasn't a good chance we pull this one in.

I don't think it's a particularly unfair price for a player with a track record of scoring goals in the PL but you'd imagine we'd hoped we could get a cut price deal. Hopefully the player helps this on its way.

If it doesn't happen then hopefully we move quickly for targets on the continent. Can't see who else we target in the PL strikers-wise that wouldn't just result in a cartel gazumping.

The market this window is different from the last window which is different from the window before it, especially in an extremely narrow market with a small pool of buyers and sellers. There will be wild swings in "market value" between transfer windows, as we have all seen. And even within the same window, every team's situation is different.

None of us know what our actual spending constraints are given that they are now dictated not by a mythical "transfer budget," but rather a series of complex rules that none of us have the ability or underlying data necessary to calculate.

Far from easy IMO.

£40m + £5m in add ons is extortion and would be insane. The lad’s got a year left and is almost 29

What do you reckon is fair value – £30m plus £5m in add-ons?

Even if we overpay by £10m, that’s only £2m per year on the PSR books over a five-year deal. I think we should go for it.

I’ve come around to the idea.  He suits our style and I genuinely think he’d make us a better side.

I’d honestly be gutted if we paid £40m for him

I’d not be happy going over £25m + £5m add ons personally and would prefer to target a younger player with potential who isn’t as developed as Wissa and either pay less or go for a younger player who’s already shown huge potential like Dibling
