We'll just have to agree to disagree. Investing with as little risk as possible appears to be the defining characteristic of our transfer policy imo. You've also got to factor in all the (even lower risk) players we'd missed out on before turning to Wissa. Woltemade was higher risk but there's no way he ends up here if we've signed Pedro, for instance.

Maybe we should have got that Guessand and guy instead.

I'd disagree that Woltemade was higher risk. Even if he wasn't very good(looks like he is thankfully) he would still have had some sell on value. Plus the potential reward part of the gamble was much higher with Woltemade.

Hindsight is always 20/20 right

Almost no one on here would have wanted him at that price, and there were pages of posts earlier on this thread of people saying they didn't want him because of his behaviour.

Once the news broke that we'd signed him, everyone changed their tune. There's a lot of denial at play here or maybe it's a sense that Eddie is infallible.

I never wanted Wissa. Isak is a prick, and he's not much better.

Not gonna lie I actually forgot about the AFCON in January. We could use him scoring in November and December before that to ease the pain.

I’ve never forgot, part of the reason I was so against signing him for 55million, the injury is not his fault though.

Couldn't agree less. His injury record was absolutely impeccable and he was a proven goalscorer in the Premier League. It was the dictionary definition of low risk.

People get so hung up on age, like. He's 29 ffs. We've not signed a corpse; I think you can do the maths and feel confident that you're at least gonna get a good couple of seasons out of the bloke. He's also played at least half of his career at a level lower than Ligue 1 so the toll on his body will be less.

If you want to argue that it was a less sustainable signing from a purely financial perspective, I'd respect the argument but ultimately put my trust in the club, given how conscious we are of PSR. We wouldn't have pulled the trigger if we weren't comfortable about the financial impact.

It's just incredibly bad luck; absolutely nothing else to it.

Pretty much. There's no need to start apportioning blame or criticism.

Hope they lose in the WC qualifiers due to him not being there. What does 2nd place from the qualifiers get you? Play off?

I looked at it a few weeks ago. If they'd won that game he got injured in they'd basically be there.

If they are one of the four best runners-up they go into a CAF play-off. They are currently 3rd best ranked but will probably have to win their final two games to stay in the top four.

They would have to win that four team play-off, to get to the inter-confederation play-off in Mexico (March 2026), which is six teams in two brackets of three. Each bracket winner qualifies.

I think that game he got injured in was their chance. They blew a two goal lead and I don't see them making the world cup now.

I was surprised we paid that much but at the time I was happy we did because I was convinced he'd score the goals we lost with Isak. It was a calculated gamble on him being a crucial part of our success this season.

Like I said, I don't think an experienced DOF would have signed off on it, but as a fan I was happy we did. Not sure who else we could have signed anyway.

Don't think it was a set back personally. Think they knew it would be longer especially when Eddie said he wasn't training on the grass yet but just said the earlier date to keep fans happy.

If this ends up being the cause for accelerating Woltemade's adaptation to PL football then maybe it's a blessing in disguise / one we can take some positives from (provided we pick up results untel Wissa is back).

Gutted for Wissa as this was the move he was pinning for to play up here under Eddie and for us.

Finishes start of January

So might see him at the end if we are lucky

Wouldn't be so sure 55m on a guy who we may see for only 2nd half of this season and that may not be definite, just hope Osula can keep stepping up and get us through to January where there'll be an option to purchase another should things go tit's up.

Shite.

Impeccable injury record is no guarantee, especially at that age and the type of player he is.  At that price, he was going to have to hit the ground running(with no football played having gone on strike) and be brilliant for us in the short term, there is no long term with him in all honesty. He was always going to miss the Afcon period. All it was going to take was one injury, not even a huge one, and it was going to look a big mistake, which is where we're at now.

Ludicrous to call it low risk.
