Cost was only slightly expensive IMO, for a proven PL scorer. Age wouldn't really be relevant if he'd delivered what we wanted for a season or two. Performance, absolutely shite.

As if that is even guaranteed, and again it's pretty hard to hit the ground running when you get a severe injury before kicking a ball.

 

As someone else has mentioned, for the prices of players these days too we overpaid, but not to the level people are making out, and im sure if he scores 10+ next season no one would complain.

You would have thought I’d learn my lesson by now after being proven wrong by so many players I have written off.

 

But… just watch Wissa warming up. He half arses his stretches and one of slowest in the sprints.

 

4 year contract so book value of £44m in the summer… if we can get £30m for him in the summer then taking a £14m hit isn’t too bad.

Assuming he continues to do nothing this season (he could still turn it around!) it's a far worse signing than Elanga given that much of the value in the deal was supposed to be baked into his first couple of seasons with us.

 

The injuries and lack of fitness have played a part (much like they have for Isak going in the other direction...) and he'll probably come good-ish at some point, but unlike our other signings we are bleeding value every week that he fails to perform at expected level.

Having not watched Brentford that intently I was expecting expecting a bit of a pressing machine. His best game for us was PSV (he was my motm) and he was an absolute nuisance, albeit against naive opposition. 

 

Hopefully it clicks tor him soon because his recent outings suggest lack of form, fitness, confidence. He must be significantly better than he has been.

This is it for me, he had a poor pre-season (his own fault) but then got his worst ever injury before he kicked a ball in anger for us, you don't just come back from that as soon as you're declared fit it takes time to get back to elite levels, add in the confidence factor, new team, desperate to do well, etc... he's not getting any younger, he's already in his twilight which is why people are getting twitchy but I don't feel like we get to see the real Wissa until next season unfortunately.

The amount of black footballers that get labelled ‘lazy’ on here is amazing! And only Jonjo Shelvey of other ethnicities attracts the same label. How can a stretch be performed lazily? Proper Nonsense!

Because the fitness requirements to be a spectator at a top flight football match are different from those to actually play in the match?  I’d hope so anyway.

Even if its not guaranteed, it's still why we bought him and were prepared to pay way more than any other club were willing to. It's only natural that he will be judged on the expectation of what he was supposed to deliver, whether he is to blame or not.

Chris Waddle, Kevin Brock, Nicky Butt, Damien Duff, Alan Smith, Mark Viduka, Laurent Robert, Marcelino, Michael Owen, HBA, David Ginola, Mick Quinn, Stephen Carr to name but a few off the top of my head are players I can remember getting flak for being ‘lazy’ - some of them were great players for the club, too.  In terms of black players getting that sobriquet, Moussa Sissoko springs to mind.  
 

I’m aware of the racist associations with perceived ‘laziness’, and I’m also aware of the tendency for commentators to laud black players’ physical strengths while white players’ ‘intelligence’ is credited far more regularly, suggesting attributes are based upon race (which is textbook racism).  But I don’t think folks thinking Wissa is lazy stems from this (though it might the case for some).  Personally I think Woltemade isn’t far behind in the pisspoor lack of aggression and application stakes - but Wissa has looked unfit and lacking in the basic requirements for effort so far.

I was referring to one particular poster saying from Wissa’a stretch and ore-match warmup you can tell he’s lazy. A pre-match warm up does not need to be standard, it just needs to get the individual player ready to perform. If someone has seen Wissa get an injury at the start of a match as he was cold and underprepared then it may be a valid criticism. But as far as I can see it’s just lazy stereotypical b***ocks!

 

I’ve been on this site through the careers of all players on your list. I won’t debate them in detail. I’ll just say that they generally fall into the “mavericks” camp and so apparent laziness was regarded as a ‘feature’ on here, or the “mercenary c***” camp so their lack of work rate was a sign of their disloyalty or lack of ability and why they should be hated.
