The experts say that players moving to the Premier League from other leagues need a full season to settle in. So, for that reason, I also think his output is okay.

 

I’m also hopeful for next season. Eddie seems to be warming to the idea right now of playing Osula up front with Nick deployed just behind him. Plus Barnes—someone Nick links up with very well.

 

What really pleased me were the Woltemade chants at SJP.

I had a look to see if we'd been linked to any player that could potentially play off the striker, and who is also versatile enough to play as an 8, and that has had a decent return of goals and assists this season.

 

We've been linked with the young Danish player Victor Froholdt at Porto who fits the bill. Mostly played as an 8 at Porto but has played as a 10 for Denmark recently.

I'd be surprised to be honest if Woltemade is happy to switch to that role behind the striker on more of a fixed basis and also somewhat surprised if Howe is willing to commit to a move away from the 4-3-3.

 

I do think that the 4-2-3-1 makes better use of the squad we have at the moment. It offers a solution to the some of the longstanding issues with our midfield - the lack of guile and ball retention in the final third, especially in central positions, plus the gaps we have been leaving in front of the defence - and would seem to benefit several players including Ramsey, Tonali and Woltemade himself. You'd be hard-pressed looking at the 4-3-3 to find any real points of connection between the players and with Gordon's expected departure we don't really have anyone who can stretch teams from out wide or lead a press from the front.

 

If we were to switch to the 4-2-3-1 and Woltemade stays then I think Ramsey and Miley are adequate backups for that position. You could sell Gordon, hopefully Wissa and even Willock and Murphy and look to replace them with one quality wide player and a solid option up front. Then you'd potentially have something like:

Barnes/Ramsey---Woltemade/(Ramsey)/(Miley)---Signing/Elanga

Woltemade has typically played just off another striker that looked to run in behind, previous to joining Newcastle.

He kind of is the perfect complement to Osula, but playing more as a 10 than an 8.

As a rule, I think young players from abroad should always be given at least a second season. Far too many examples in league history of someone looking like complete dogshit (and Obviously Woltemade isn't that bad) and then becoming a great player.

Mental to think he's being called a flop by some and the "eye test" has shown plenty of struggles for sure, but if he starts and scores at Fulham on Sunday he'll be 12/36, a goal every three games which isn't shabby at all for a striker. Then you consider a handful of those 36 were in midfield, it's not a bad return at all.

I think repurposing him as a 10 in a 4-2-3-1 is the only way he stays - and the only reason he ought to stay. If Eddie plans to revert to 4-3-3, then there is no position on the field NW is a natural fit for. He needs to be connecting play, playing off a 9, creating chances and getting to the six yard line himself. Eddie mentioned in an interview that he was pleased Nick scored, and that he hopes he can replicate that form this week, so hopefully we run the same lineup back to Fulham and just maybe we can get similar linkage through midfield and attack, convincing Eddie to get out of the 4-3-3 as our main (well, only) formation.

 

I know a lot of people want to give Wissa another year for many of the same reasons I'd like to give NW another chance. But Wissa seems brain dead and tone deaf to me. The Mateta thing is seared into my brain forever (never mind him liking Sunderland posts after the derby).
