Set Pieces (Free Kicks, Long Throws, Corners)

Leverkusen almost scored from one of “long throws” yesterday when Tino barely got it into the box

That came from a counter when it was passed back to Tonali who slipped over at the edge of their box.

Corners weren’t great last night, but hardly useless when when we scored from them in two of the previous three.

Take the sample size of Aug to Dec rather than last 2 weeks - it’s not a good look

I do find our approach to attacking corners quite bizarre, there was a couple yesterday where the delivery goes to the back post and we didn't even have a single player there, not one

I get the plan might have been front post but surely you have at least one player at the back?

Unforgivable for me how that happened multiple times. It’s not that hard to have 5 run front post and one, just fucking one, stay at back post. Was how they scored their goal. Arsenal score loads from that. Yet we kept having everyone run front post, where only one can head it and if all miss, there’s no back up option.

I do wonder whether they are overplaying the pull everyone away, block the keeper and try and score direct from the corner card. Bruno has tried at least three times and pretty sure Gordon tried to score near post recently too.

Have you seen our corners when everyone is at the back post and the bloke taking the corner underhits it to the front post

At this stage I am of the opinion we haven’t got a fkn clue what we are doing - go back to basics and deliver the ball near the penalty spot - then work from there

It sums up what a shambles we have been this season - we can’t even do basics properly - poor defending, poor passing, poor positional play, poor attacking, poor set piece deliveries, poor decision making, poor subs, poor team selection, poor recruitment and poor results

Did you mean to post this on a Wolves forum?

By the standards we have set the last 3/4 years - we have been poor - I don’t think you can escape that - I haven’t seen any consistency that tells me that our trajectory is leading us to what I deem a successful season for us (top 6 etc) - Can that change? Of course it can - when things have gone well - I have praised the staff and players and when they haven’t you can criticise also - you can only judge based on what you see and we’ve been poor from Aug to Dec

Saying we’ve been shit at everything is just a ridiculously pessimistic/negative take though, surely you can see that?

We're literally 3 points away.

I said we’ve been poor (not shit) and listed a number of areas as examples - I can only go off the sample size of Aug-Dec and I don’t think within that period my eyes have deceived me - I can say based on what I have seen - maybe I should have used the term average - we’ve not been good in this period and everyone can see that surely

How exciting is it though that we can all point to a bunch of things and areas where we've been objectively pretty ropey yet we are where we are in all competitions? How good will it be when we start playing well and stop conceding the late goals?! (Assuming it happens before April!)

I’d say we’ve been ‘poor’ twice. West and Brentford. There’s been a fair few average or a bit either way games - off the top of my head - Leeds, Wolves, Fulham, Burnley, Brighton. And obviously  some good ones as well.

So maybe, overall, average is a fair call, but that seems a long way from your initial assessment.

I will regrade to average which actually in the performance-ometer is fair - there’s enough time for us to move to good which should see us where we need to be

I really hope we can kick on as it’s been up and down all season

Does my head in how every team has felt like they have to copy what everyone else is doing. Nobody was taking long throws 12 months ago, suddenly it's an essential part of the game even when you've got a pair of weedy full backs.

This - too many messages from too many people imo - rather work on the technical elements of the team than the team toddling off to this guy during training
