Ross Wilson (Sporting Director)

Let's be honest it will be his job to sign who's he told to sign

Think that's probably true tbh, but as long as Eddie's here, then it's probably the only way to go. Howe knows a good player when he sees one, so if Wilson can do the negotiation part, that's all we really need. His role will be more of an administrative one I imagine.

Fair enough. Hopefully he doesn't come with as much baggage as the last two and just cracks on.

Ashworth would still be here IMO, if not for Jimbo going in at Man Utd and pulling him away. Can't really say he had any baggage.

From what I saw this summer, the targets they went for and who ever was responsible (I'm sure it's a lot more than just Eddie) seemed very positive.

The issue was forcing people into positions they were not really equipped to deal with, hopefully with a new CEO and Sporting Director on board plus Sugs on the data side of things those issues should be a thing of the past.

If he can sort out contracts, negotiate transfers simultaneously and manage football operations without saying something stupid I’m all for it.

Yup, we've tried two "big name" sporting directors and they were shite. If Wilson can do the basics well and leave talent ID to Eddie, Nickson and Suds I'll be happy.

Bad appointment imo.

  1. Stole Anderson from us
  2. Fleeced us on Elanga
  3. Has a stupid face

Two of those things are good things imo.

That's right. Nothing wrong with having a stupid face. Never did Andrew Lloyd-Weber any harm

Forest have done a decent amount of business in Brazil.

Hope that counts for something with Wilson if we like any players over there.

Still think that's a market we should be looking at more.

It more sounds like Howe has been involved in the process and has had a chance to meet him. If their plan is to keep Howe long term (which I sincerely hope it is) we can’t really afford another situation like we had with Mitchell.

I’m hoping he’s a quiet administrator type a bit like Ashworth.

Howe has been a great manager for us, he sets the team up well, has forged a wonderful spirit and he's a credit to the club. But while I can understand the sense that he wants more control over the transfer process, I don't think we can say at this stage that it's necessarily a good idea.

My memory is that Nickson and then Ashworth received plenty of credit at the time for some of our past successes, from Bruno and Botman to the pivot towards Isak when Wilson got injured, while Ashworth in particular was heralded then blamed for the signing of Tonali and Hall was seen as his bastard until he turned out to be decent, at which point people looked at his blonde hair and noticed a resemblance to Howe.

Following Ashworth's departure we've had two difficult summers, with the past one seemingly salvaged by the late move for Woltemade after we missed out on at least four other strikers. Thiaw has all the tools to be a resounding success and I like Elanga and Wissa who still have everything to prove, while I'm not convinced that Ramsey was a good signing. Whatever there's not a track record of success with Howe leading the transfer process in the absence of a proper sporting director, so hopefully Wilson is coming in with some of his own ideas.

I don’t think Ashworth was shit tbh.

He made some sensible decisions.

Isn’t it fairly important in this role for people to not think you’re a cunt? Cos he failed spectacularly at that one.

I’m assuming it isn’t normal for the manager to pick the sporting director? Media reports on this seem to think Howe has chosen him.

PIF tried going the other way with Eales calling the shots and it backfired with Mitchell. From all the noise coming out of St James following his departure, it seemed PIF basically decided to bet on Howe, which shouldn't be a massive surprise given his success on signings.

It's not ideal for me, I prefer some separation of roles, but while Howe's here I'm prepared to let him be in charge, and I think PIF have taken that approach as well. We saw the weaknesses of not having a qualified DOF at the club in this transfer window just gone. Hopefully having Wilson here will fix that.

It’s not but after the last appointment they’ve probably accepted it needs to be someone Howe can work with. Hopefully, he’s not a yes man and brings some good ideas to recruitment, even though the summer was salvaged, there’s clearly room to improve our scouting.

It's not typical I don't think, but from the way things have transpired since the takeover, I think it makes the most sense.

Wouldn't necessarily think he's picked him per se, but moreso that he's been involved in the selection process, which certainly wasn't the case with Mitchell.

From the Athletic:

"Howe was involved in the process along with majority shareholders, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), and co-owner James Reuben.

PIF has also been aware of Wilson for several years, including interest when he was sporting director at Rangers between 2019 and 2023, in which time the club won their first league title for a decade and reached the Europa League final.

His profile, as a sporting director who creates a strong club culture and builds the infrastructure needed to support a manager, is also seen as being a good fit for Howe who is hands-on with recruitment and football matters."

Sounds like Howe certainly had a say in the process (expected after Mitchell), but nothing to suggest he chose him.
