Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester City [LCSF 1st Leg] (13/01/25)

Recommended Posts

Can't be too disheartened to be honest. Its a result half expected, and especially after our efforts in the last week  when a lot of those players played a lot of the minutes in the those matches too.

A 1-1, or keep it to 0-1, and we might have a chance, but think 0-2 is a bit too much with our record against them down there.

But, its 3 weeks away, a lot can change. Let's see what happens. :clap2:

Great effort. Haarland didn't have a sniff.

Would have preferred Wolte from the start after he terrorized them in the league game, but the bloody FA Cup game gave him 120 mins + pens. Wissa had that decent header, but his linkup play was poor. Elanga did nowt yet again. Everyone else did great I thought, finishing aside. Joelinton is definitely back.

Didn't get the run of the ball. 10 vs. 11 when they scored the first. The offside goal was offside, so no need to be apologetic for it not counting. The only issue was why VAR took forever when he's clearly ahead of Pope. It was not a goal. Their second was a brilliant move, but we looked very tired by then.

City are utterly boring as fuck to watch but exceptional at grinding teams down. Don’t necessarily think we played badly, but lack of finishing has fucked us here. When you get opportunities against City you need to take them because they just keep you under the cosh and the moment you switch off you’re picking the ball out your net.

Do find it deeply frustrating that it can't just be one of those 'proud of the performance' nights. Because although I am - because it was an amazing effort with tired legs - we had chances, and have ourselves to blame for not making a better game of it.

Right now I just feel miserable about the intensity of the schedule ahead. We already look absolutely shagged and it's not getting any easier. The FA Cup draw is even more deflating now we're out of this.

It's freed up the 2nd leg for us to let the first team get some rest in at least. Has to be the reserves in that match. Given the congestion I just don't see how we can be competitive in it especially from 2 goals down.

Just looked a game too far for us tonight. No need to criticise or pile in on anyone, just a bit frustrating that, as good as we are at home, there are just some teams who can keep us at arm's length for most of the game and take their chances when they appear. We had our moments and laid a few gloves on them but City controlled that once the first one went in in all honesty. No disgrace to lose to that lot, they've got quality in every position and can replace it once it gets tired too, that's a very nice situation to be in :hmm:

The last part of that game reminded me of the AC Milan game in the CL a few seasons back. Desperate for a goal, but extremely leggy and therefore wide open at the other end.

Too many of the players weren’t at it today. If we want to win those games we need everyone on form and we didn’t have that.

Disappointing, particularly being 2 down as that puts it well out of reach in the 2nd leg away from home. Need to bounce back with a win at Wolves and against PSV and things will look rosey again.

Typical the player who should have been cup tied scored.

Cheque book / super club manager Pep doing it again. Quick £65m transfer to bail him out the shit again.

When was this like?

Someone's started a thread about it "The offside rule."

Go and have a look at that.

Thank fucking god no one on this forum manages the team. This is an insanely defeatist attitude.

The odds are against us, sure, but we have to go out there and at least give it a fucking go.

I just wish Gordon didn't miss that absolute sitter against Bournemouth in the last min.

Would've saved Barnes and Woltemade 30 mins of extra time.

Then, if they started, I think we'd have at least come out with a draw. They terrorised them last game.

Fine margins, we miss so many easy chances.

That just won't happen though. I would advocate it, happily (if our our depth players are even available), but Howe and the squad aren't gonna throw in the towel.

It’s almost like these rules keep coming in that benefit the bigger teams with bigger budgets and bigger squads.

Was inevitable once he signed.

Best we can hope for is that Semenyo is actually cup-tied and they get DQ'd. :aww:

They'd make us replay the match right now on some Vince Mcmahon shit.

I’m normally furiously against the idea of playing reserves in a cup tie, but I would be tempted for the second leg.  Our fixture list is horrific, and the chances of a 2+ victory margin in the return leg are practically zero.
