Newcastle United vs. mackems: 22/3/26 @ 12:00 (Sky Sports)

Recommended Posts

Impossible to predict this, despite the football clichés this derby does usually tend to go to the team in form at the time.

Had we not played last night/or won id have been fairly confident of a win, coming off the back of beating Chelsea and these losing to Brighton. However last night throws it up in the air completely for me. All depends how we react and if we show up.

Probably 1-1.

Don't think their manager is stupid enough to do it but I'd love them to think after last night "these are vulnerable" and come and have a go because we'd rip them to shreds.

As it is, it'll be ugly until we score but fancy us to win 2 or 3 nil with a bit to spare in the end

A win would be massive, no matter how scrappy. It would mean three league wins on the spin with arguably six eminently winnable games in the last seven.

I doubt we'll catch Liverpool but Chelsea and Villa are wobbling. Sixth would guarantee Europa League, maybe seventh if Arsenal, Man City or Liverpool win the cup.

(The Europa could be perfect for us next season - more squad management possible, a good chance of winning it, raises our UEFA coefficient, and another route to UCL the year after).

We'll have Miley and Bruno back after the break, with Schär not far away too. Could yet finish on a high.

The perfect next game for us following last night's disaster. They've scored once in open play in the last 8 games so we should approach it with no fear. They'll play that awful no possession low block so we'll have to navigate that.

I'd play Tino for Trippier and controversially Botman for Burn. Same defence as against Chelsea plus its our strongest back four. Willock for Tonali as well, or maybe a Howe curveball and Woltemade for Tonali as he's more likely to unlock a low block.

Good to hear Howe talking up the importance of this game. I'm not totally convinced he got it before the last derby.

Really does feel like we have to win.

We can't be losing twice to this lot in the same season and I don't think a draw will suffice. They're not all that and have been lucky as fuck in many of their games.

That being said, they're resilient and hard to beat. They're a kryptonite for us as it is, never mind the fact they play with a low-block which is our worst nightmare.

If we score first and early and they have to open up it could be very different, but I fear we will really miss Tonali and especially Bruno in the midfield battle.

The way to win against these is to play football and let our superior technique come through.

Same way as happened yesterday when we tried to go toe to toe with Barcelona. In the end they had better players and that played out in the final score.

There isn’t much between the two teams technically imo.

That would be a massive indictment of our transfer dealing considering they only got promoted last season.

Into these lot. Aggressive from the off, straight at them. Two nil up within the first fifteen minutes and they completely lose it. Floodgates open.

Total football. Mackems lose their heads. Red card just before half time.

Gordon gets brought down, gets up, looks around and just smirks when he realises Xhaka is off. Crowd knows what is coming.

Everyone is waving, LAALALALALALA, HEY GOODBYE.

Spring sunshine blazing down, St James’ bouncing, people hugging strangers like old friends.

Hopkinson comes out at half time and announces free pints for everyone, forever. The stadium starts expanding in real time, unfurling and opening up, clockwork-like. Unreal scenes.

Just now, Kid Icarus said:

Prepare yourself for ~80% possession and trying to get through the lowest and blockiest low block you've ever seen.

We know that's how they are going to set up, there's not much going to surprise us. We just have to be patient and play our way in.

I recommend you take a look at the first video just to see Wyn Davies’ challenge on Sunderland goalkeeper Jim Montgomery.

These are shite. Home win. I know we struggle against this type of style but I think we get this done.

Pointless playing Gordon up front because there’s going to be no space in behind and there’s nothing to press as it’s going to get launched long at every opportunity.

Would go Wolt up front with both Gordon/Barnes or Murph for the crosses.

I think it’ll be an unexciting 2-0 to us or something.
