You were probably too busy canvassing everyone to ask if they were members or ST holders and then explaining to the members why they weren't as good fans as what you are [emoji38]

45mins… boyo… 45mins… See Chelsea this season. Second half was very uncomfortable until stoppage time when we scored twice.

We benefited from getting 2 successive goals early on to lift the pressure but as soon as it went 1-2 it was very twitchy. Similar to the Southampton semi when we were technically 3 up then lost Bruno and control of the game.

Scorelines really do cloud judgements on here [emoji38]

2/3 of that season was a grind until Isak hit his stride in rotation and alongside Wilson.

I remember that Southampton game. There was lots of twitching in the stands, but we never looked anything but comfortable.

Can't recall the Brighton second half, other than the goals.

You’ve lost me now. Think you are mixing me up with someone else.

Gordon back for this according to Hope.

Getting the links laughed off by Bayern might have brought him down a peg or 3.

Aye why not? It's something a bit different. Might just give us that bit spark we've been missing.

Would love to see this XI. Start on the front foot and make it count, render any second-half drop-off moot.

A recruitment pivot seems to be underway, with the club ready to lean into European and South American scouting networks that have been beefed up in the last nine months. Combined with more and smarter use of data, Newcastle believe they are well-placed to learn from errors made in 2025 that have set the club’s progress back significantly.

Fans might be reserving judgement on a director of football yet to oversee one first team signing but insiders speak well of Wilson. He has bought energy and – most importantly – alignment to Newcastle. His relationship with Howe means there is buy-in from every department in what the club are doing, which wasn’t necessarily the case under the outspoken Paul Mitchell, who first attempted to overhaul transfer processes at St James’ Park at the start of last season.

It is understood Newcastle’s planning has stepped up in recent weeks, with a much larger pool of targets than in previous years.

Among the lists being prepared are: market opportunities (including free agents and players with little-known or time-sensitive release clauses), up-and-coming talent from European markets, “Premier League proven” and off-the-radar targets seen as having untapped potential.

How many players come in is a moveable feast, with some insiders bristling at talk of a complete overhaul. The general principle given new squad cost ratio (SCR) rules is that Newcastle will need to operate to a “one in, one out” policy, so sales will be required, not just to free up “squad cost” space but also to provide financial wriggle room for other players.

That is why the Magpies will not be afraid to listen to offers for Yoane Wissa.

While there is some interest, the general feeling is his value has dropped to around £15-20m after they paid Brentford £55m for him last summer.

What is clear is that as well as replacing Kieran Trippier at right-back, finding a goalkeeper to improve on the underwhelming Aaron Ramsdale and bringing in a younger centre-back to likely replace Fabian Schar, Newcastle want a striker.

Intriguingly The i Paper understands that another of Newcastle’s priorities is finding a specialist No 6, a move that suggests they may be preparing for a stylistic evolution this summer.

The club have had previous interest in Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who is also on Manchester United’s long-list.

Outgoings? Newcastle expect there to be interest in Anthony Gordon but will demand closer to £80m than the £55m Bayern Munich are believed to value him at.

“The club can’t be afraid of selling players,” one senior source says. “It’s something we’ve got to get away from. This will be part of the future.”

Sandro Tonali’s future will depend on interest but captain Bruno Guimaraes, a frustrated bystander during recent troubles, is expected to be central to the rebuild.

Yes please.

Proper class that 4-1. Sunny evening, pressing them all over proper Howe ball and ended up battering them. Would love us to get back to that

We’d just qualified for the UCL against all the odds so I’m sure he can forgiven for going a little overboard with his praise that night.

Our effort and concentration and commitment could not be faulted. Where we’ve struggled this season is concentration due to every game being on a knife edge it’s wore us out. I still see effort and commitment. Just not many goal takers.

My point still stands. The opposition still had a great 35+ minute spell. Like us this season they had no goal taker on the night.

Was that not against Leicester 4-5 days later? We needed a point and only just got it. Pope saved us late on.

My memory is a little hazy. I watched both in Ibiza

Technically (the qualification) you’re correct. If I recall correctly the Brighton game put it in our hands to do it (gain a point) without needing anything at Chelsea which we ended up getting a point at I think 1-1.
