Do they not even have an Aaron Mooy level player?

Not even a Chris Wood.

The population is increasing but still, for example, 10 million short of Poland. So many young athletes go into other sports like Rules, both rugby codes, cricket, breakdancing etc. When I was a kid, football was almost exclusively for children of recent emigrés like Ange, Bosnich, Cahill, Viduka, Bresciano and me. Like all nations with a small pool of players you might have a spell with a couple of world-class players then a decade or so with nobody.

The baseline is better than it has been with the A-Lwague infrastructure helping, but that can only get you so far.

I presumed there had to be something there. Lack of academies when those franchises came in to replace the clubs that disappeared?

Irony is Australia missed out in 1998 and 2002 losing difficult one-off play-offs - teams which would have cruised AFC qualifying every time since.

I was in the youth set up of one of the clubs at that time and senior teams manager was useless and got the job not based on merit. And since then we have had some better managers come through, but the likes of Postecoglu, Muscat,Arnold and Popovic is not an extensive list.

Theres also been a disconnect between a league clubs and local communities that our ethnic clubs had prior to that thats definitely played a part.

Poor decision making and proper investment into grassroots has hurt us. This is compounded further by cost of getting kids to play is getting out of hand, was close to $300 for registration fees for my 8 year old daughter to play. Unless things change its going to get worse sadly.

There’s only ever been 12 transfers from the MLS to the PL, and 3 or 4 of them have hardly ever played.

Thinking more recently - Alphonso Davies, Thiago Almada, Gomez for Brighton, Jhon Duran, Tyler Adams is an absolute menace when he plays against us. Think that Josh Sargent has chosen the easy way out going to MLS, could have carved out a decent career in England. Jack Harrison. Castellanos(who we should be in for) did a lot of NYC FC. Maybe not the sexiest names but didn't look out place. Dempsey, the GOAT US player. Think Brendan Aaronson will have a solid PL career if he stays here, wouldn't mind signing him tbh.

Really iteresting perspective - cheers.

To be honest I think there's also an element that the PL is infinitely more global now than it was in the late 90s and early 2000s, which makes it harder for Aussie players to find a pathway into the PL (same is true for Scottish and Irish players). This probably exaggerates the (very real) difference in quality when perceived from a UK perspective. Most Aussie players now seem to forge careers in the Championship, across European leagues or settle for financial success in Asian leagues.

But there's no doubt that the likes of Kewell, Viduka and Schwarzer are a million miles ahead of the current talent level and would still be very good PL players if playing today.

Based on this showing they'd all still get a starting spot
