I know fuck all about anything but I am absolutely certain that they could double the capacity of the East Stand by moving the pitch westwards by as many feet as possible and building a steep new stand in its place. They can even paint a giant picture of the sun on the back to keep Leazes Terrace happy.

Or a giant tree to match the others which keep other parts of it in shade. Didn’t notice until it was pointed out on a SJP rooftop tour last year.

If we didn’t mind moving for 2 years, I’d knock the lot down. and rebuild by turning the pitch 90 degrees. There’s so much you can do so without having to spoil the area.

The Aviva Stadium could be a loose template to work off, the shorter end could keep Leazes Terrace happy but absolutely go to town on all other sides.

Not a fan of the space ship/childs potty design, something with cleaner edges would be better.

Honestly, the Georgian architecture in the city centre is wildly overrated. Grey Street is holding up quite well but the buildings of Granger Town are in a dreadful state. Absolutely filthy and signs of rot everywhere. It’s actually quite embarrassing seeing how badly the city centre has been allowed to decay and God only knows what visitors to  the city must think. And don’t get me started on all of the embedded chewing gum on every street. It’s absolutely rancid.

That’s having austerity govts not maintain the area to blame, not the architecture.  The stain that is Eldon Square should be sufficient proof of what happens when you chuck away your heritage.  Take the Georgian terracing away and what to you have?  Let’s be honest, not a lot of difference with places like Sunderland.

Lose its originality and the Gallowgate/Leazes End to turn it into some kind of flat pack arena....

God no.

I’d be amazed if we didn’t expand the Gallowgate with another tier as they’ve said they want to stay at St James and now own Strawberry place again. I know there’s clearly structural issues with the metro etc but with modern technology and architecture I’m sure it can be done. Wild guess but  I imagine they’ve already got a pretty good idea what they’re able to do re expansion and will undoubtedly have spoken to architects.

My personal opinion is the benefits outweighs the negatives of staying at St James re atmosphere and location. Another 10-12k seats gives plenty opportunity for more season tickets and plenty member/ballot options. Plus if the extension was similar to current set up you’ll have another two rows of boxes for corporate stuff. Match going traffick numbers wise doesn’t actually bring in that much revenue vs premier league tv money so I think 62-65k is sufficient for an expansion if it can be done.

Merdhad Ghodoussi is/was an architect (according to Craig hope)

So I wouldn’t worry about the expansion, he is all over it

Yeah I know it's the council and government to blame for the state of the city centre. Just making the point that the architecture within it is anything but beautiful right now. I obviously do not want to see Granger Town go as it is right in the heart of the city, but something has to be done to renovate it because its in an embarrasing state at the moment. Leazes Terrace though can go for me as it serves no purpose to the city, due to its location. It is absolutely not a tourist atttaction and nobody local goes anywhere near it except when going to the match.

Don’t think it’d happen as they’ll want more

corporate areas but I’d love the Gallowgate to be one huge stand, similar to Spurs and Anfield. All of it being safe standing would be immense.

It’ll be a couple of years off tbh but can’t see what they’ve got planned.

The same, however I think it maybe too steep and the price of the extension would be a lot with all the engineering complications, so you’d think that they will want boxes/corporate areas in there as well to help pay it back.

Yes, the Eldon Square project now looks pretty terrible in hindsight…

It’s not even 50 years old yet.

I would like to know when that photo was taken. Not any time recently I bet. Next time you are walking up Granger Street take a close look at the brickwork. It’s absolutely filthy.

Pret looks to be open still, maybe just after all those paving slabs were all laid.

Does that mean we can demolish the tatty advertising boards now?

Heard beamish are interested, as long as they can be dismantled bri.....

I'm properly excited about what the future holds for St James' now, I thought will the sale of the land that was it forever.

Wonder if that's why I was given a very soft ultimatum by the club for my seats in gallowgate west. They just said they had some plans but it wasn't set in stone so could renew in same seats or accept a move elsewhere (for an eyewatering amount btw)

When you think that pitch level is above shearers bar, adding level 7 is going to make this thing a monster! I don't think level 7 would fit into this picture!

A few people discussing alternatives to just recreating leazes/milburn level 7 wrap around.....aesthetically that would be the best option, however I'm convinced that was not going to be the casino 60k project.

As far as I know (I'm sure we've spoke way back in thread about this, although now seems more relevant) the casino expansion did not include the gallowgate west corner, but rather a single  megastructure that went back beyond the metro to make a giant gallowgate but far less incline (like the kop) with the GWC remaining in its current form. I think the roof of the gallowgate would be the same level as the rest of the stadium.

Wish we could get a pic of what that would look like
