If so I'd think that a team having a midfield which included a generational talent and a £40m rated payer, in last season's second division, would have finished closer than 24 points off the promotion places and 16 off third. Apart from a very fast start, that midfield seldom dominated a game and pretty much scraped through the remainder of the season. We can't really pick PL experience then moan about PSR - its either one or the other. There was plenty of bargains to be had around Europe last summer that would've made improved our team for not much money.

Fair enough on Diaby but ultimately he wasn't good enough. He was regularly left out of their side and quickly moved on. We didn't overpay on Tonali. The only people who said that at the time were massively jealous from what I remember. I agree entirely on the last part though.

I miss Staveley and Ghodoussi. I feel like for most of the time they were here we had a fairly regular stream of rumours to get our teeth into.

The reason the athletic don't know about our transfer targets is because they are serious journalists. Random transfer rumours and gossip is normally assigned to the gutter press, hence why Hope and Edwards are all over it.... and yet are still wrong.

Moussa Diaby scored 6 goals and had 10 assists in the PL in his one season there. I don't think ppl were "massively wrong" on him. That's better than Anthony Gordon this season. But with that fee you would hope for someone to be transformational and he wasn't. I think he had pretty strong pedigree too. He had 9 goals, 9 assists in his last Bundesliga season, he tracked close to that. Nothing in his profile suggested he was a playmaker or ought so they got what they got. I love the look of Akliouche - but he doesn't have the proven record. If he did though he would cost £60m+. In our position you have to gamble on players. Isak wasn't a guaranteed hit, he came after a season scoring 6 league goals. That's why other big clubs didn't go in for him. They said we overpaid for Tonali. In our position, we have to go for players that other top clubs aren't convinced about - but we are. Or they think is too expensive but fits perfect for us.

Apart from Brennan Johnson, who we aren't signing and isn't cheap, how do we know any of these are good enough for this league? I'm not saying they are/aren't FWIW, but I'm not the one signing a multi-million pound cheque and basically staking my job on them. We were told Moussa Diaby was class, along with countless other players and it turned out the foreign football experts were massively wrong. If we are signing from abroad, let's go for someone who is of real pedigree like Tonali and Isak were, or don't bother at all.

Club is very tight lipped when it comes to transfers and doesn’t tend to leak much (from the club side anyway). Combined with Man U and a few others being the leakiest clubs going it’s basically leading to many of our fans just filling in the blanks themselves and/or giving the impression of inaction. Basically every player and manager is on holiday at the moment. Folk just need to chill out.
