Wouldn't mind Van Buyten but we need attacking players.

we need a dominant CB

True. If he comes through the door it needs to be followed closley by a couple of midfield passers.

If we fail to sign a concrete DM i could see the advantage of signing Van Buyten as we could then switch Faye into DM and play Van Buyten and Taylor at centre half.

Why would we move Faye from his best position to accomadate other players? Should leave Faye and Taylor at CB and not mess about.

Faye and Van Buyten would be better tbh

I believe Faye to be not only our best CB but also our best DM, therefore it wouldn't be accomodating but playing.

Faye's pretty dominant tbh.

We really don't need any defenders. :undecided:

Left-back. We've only got one.

There should be two players vying for each position, if at all possible.

A LB and a CB wouldn't be exciting, but they'd be useful additions, in the LB case it's a necessary addition.

Signing Van Buyten could allow to put Faye in the holding midfield role potentially, this could be good IMO a better ball winner than Butt or Smith for that matter also able to win a lot of headers in  midfield. A backup Left back should also be a priority, with an attacking CM of course.

Aye, that's fair enough, a left-back would be useful, but there's still back-up there anyway. It's all this talk of centre-backs though that are underwhelming me, i really think it is just about the LAST position we need recruitments, and i'm including goalkeepers in that aswell.

The Faye/Taylor partnership has the potential to be a very good one (they're both strong and quick with strong individual attributes, namely Taylor/organisation, Faye/aerial prowess). Then there's Caçapa as the immediate back-up, who can sometimes look a bit nervy but he's not a bad player at all, very strong in the tackle and seems capable of bringing the ball out of defense and playing it, which is useful if we're to replicate Keegan's previous style.

Then Rozehnal, who's a bit shit, but decent fourth choice. Then the forgotten legend that is Peter Rampage.

We need a creative midfielder, more than anything. I desperately hope that, if we do sign in this window, we sign one of these. Signing defenders now would be a real waste.

You can only sign what's available/who is attainable though.

I'm sure Keegan knows what we need and the sort of player he's going to have to bring in.

People need to start screwing their sensible heads on again, delirium is very so "last week".

We have a squad of 22 allready-at present yes we are short because of suspensions, stupidity and a month long kick about in Africa. If players come in you can guarantee players will be going out.

Ashley might bankroll the transfer fees but not so sure about 26 players wages. It is very difficult to keep more than a squad of 22 happy especially as i dont see European football next season.

So we have 1 L/B and 5 forwards-thats an imbalance that needs sorting.

i really hope we are not going to panic buy.

Why waste X amount of money buying a defender just for the sake of it, if that's all that's available? Bringing in recruitments like Campbell or Brown or Bridge (i can't speak for Van Buyten) will do very little for a defense that craves continuity - i'd rather spend that cash elsewhere. It's only worth signing a defender if they're absolutely quality imo.

I have faith in Keegan though, if he thinks we need a defender than that's OK with me. ;)

Sol Campbell is absolutely quality, if you ask me, although it's a very valid point when used about van Buyten and Brown. Bridge is also top quality and would be a massive asset to the squad as well.

Like your good self, I'm a bit young to remember the original Keegan days brilliantly, but his first signing was Brian Kilcline and he was immediately made club captain, because KK thought we lacked leadership. So he went out and bought a captain, who was also a centre-half. I think Kev later said he was the most important signing he made at NUFC (just checked, and yes he did).

Yes it's not incredibly long-term, but if we need leadership again (which we blatantly do, in all areas of the field), then surely Sol Campbell is the best we can hope to attain to fill that role?

That's the way I'm looking at it, anyway. Not every player is bought on ability alone, which I'm sure you know, and Campbell could be brilliant for Taylor and the other defenders if he keeps himself fit and keeps his head. I've been howling for an experienced CB for seasons now, and Campbell has headed my personal preference list (not that I actually have a list), somebody like him or Hyypia could still be invaluable here - even though time is quickly running out on their respective careers.

I know people like Faye, I like Faye, but I can't see him being an automatic starter under Keegan like he was under Allardyce. If Keegan gets Campbell, if the reports are true, then I'm assuming we'll see Campbell/Taylor if both are fit and available for selection, which I do understand won't go down too well with some.

Newcastle's players have told manager Kevin Keegan they are in desperate need of new blood.

Keegan is now giving his urgent attention to strengthening his squad before the transfer window closes before he turns his mind to deciding who to keep from the 23 backroom staff he inherited from Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce had a huge number of specialists working with him and Keegan is expected to tell many of them that their services are no longer required.

Keegan told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle: "The players are saying 'we need players', and if the players are saying that, and I'm saying that, you can be assured we've got a small, but good quality, squad.

"There were only 16 players we could pick against Bolton. When the African guys come back, and the guys who are suspended come back, we'll have a strong squad if we can get one or two in.

"That's what you need in the Premier League."

Keegan has already been linked with left-backs Wayne Bridge or Nicky Shorey and central defenders Sol Campbell and Richard Dunne.

Asked if he had made a decision on his backroom staff, Keegan, who has brought in his old assistant Arthur Cox, added: "Not yet. My first priority now is to see if we can get players in."

Keegan will continue with Michael Owen as captain - keeper Shay Given had captained the side in the FA Cup last week, and Alan Smith before that under Allardyce.

""I think we'll leave it with him at the moment, and if he comes to me and says he enjoys it, then we can look at it longer term," said Keegan, who handed the armband to Owen as an olive branch after the striker had criticised his spell as England manager in his autobiography.

Campbell i'll agree with, on second thoughts. I think he is a bit consistent, but he is just about one of my favourite ever defenders and i've harped on about him in seasons prior to this. Maybe a new berth would do him good, like moving to Pompey did. If the option for Campbell was there then we'd probably be daft not to take it, thinking about it.

But the rest of them, even Bridge who i'm quite fond of, i don't think they'd help massively. I think Enrique is performing at 'good' and will comfortably propel himself into 'very good' if he plays every game in a regular defense. We do have cover for left-back anyhow, albeit not ideal but he looks fit enough (as does Beye in regards to right-back). I really think we can save the defense until the summer.

Campbell on the cheap would probably be worth it though. It could also give us freedom to push Faye into DM from time to time, too.

The centre-mids though and the lack of quality is quickly becoming a matter of urgency though imo.

Think we'll probably end up getting Van Bueyten on loan and nobody else. (EDIT: Maybe that Barry Robson fella on the cheap as well)

In a week or so Keegan will realize how ridiculous prices for established premiership players has become and will just end up saying "f*** it.

"20m for Bentley! That's more than I payed for Shearer! "
