Keegan facing fresh striker injury crisis

NEWCASTLE United’s striker crisis deepened here in Palma last night when Shola Ameobi hobbled out of the ONO Stadium with a hamstring problem with less than an hour played.

 

Kevin Keegan’s squad left Tyneside on Wednesday without Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Andy Carroll.

 

And his paper-thin squad has had to rely on wantaway striker Shola Ameobi and Alan Smith in their pre-season friendlies.

 

However, the pairing has yet to score so far and Smith has yet to conjure up a shot in any of Newcastle’s three pre-season matches.

 

Now, with the new season just 15 days away for United, Ameobi is facing a race against time to be fit for the daunting trip to Old Trafford.

 

Ameobi – who wants first-team football at Premier League level this season – told the Chronicle: “I felt my hamstring tighten up and as soon as I felt that I came off. Hopefully, I caught that in time.

 

“I’m hoping this niggle won’t hold me back as I need to stay fit.”

 

Ameobi ended last season believing his career at United was over, but KK’s injury problems have resulted in him being thrown in at the deep end.

 

And although West Brom, Norwich and Toronto FC want the player’s services, he added: “I still want to be a Newcastle United player, and I still am. That’s where my focus is.

 

“I had quite a few injuries last season. There were different things that kept me back and stopped me being as fit as I should have been.

 

“I missed a lot of pre-season last year with a thigh problem, and that’s what held me back.

 

“I wasn’t fit enough to challenge for a place in the team. This season I’ve made sure I’ve been right. I’ve worked very hard. The manager wants us to be one of the fittest teams in the league.”

 

Yet with the player limping on the team bus for the trip back to their luxury Son Vida base, he was gutted about the fact his future remains up in the air.

 

He added: “I’m still a Newcastle United player, and I have to be professional about it,” added Ameobi. “Whatever happens in the next month or so, I have to make sure my head’s right.

 

“Football’s a frustrating game at times, but you have to keep your head up, and hope for the best.

 

“This is the fittest I’ve been in a few years, and hopefully, that can translate into playing more games. I need to improve my form.

 

“I have to look after myself, and no matter how much I love the club, I have to satisfy my need for first-team football.

 

“I’m working hard. Fitness has been a big issue for me in the last two or three years.

 

“But I have made sure I’ve had a good pre-season by keeping myself fit over the summer.

 

“I have to be professional and make sure my body’s right, and that I’m in the right frame of mind.”

Who can blame the lad for wanting nothing more than to wear the shirt and play for the club he has always supported and loved? The fact whether he is good enough or not for what is needed up front is neither here nor there. In my opinion he isn't what we need but for pete's sake don't stick the knife into someone who was only doing what any one of us can only dream of doing. There are far less deserving or caring players who need to be shown the door first.

 

Above everything Shola is a geordie who tried his best to fill the hardest position at the club. He gave it his best shot - even though it usually ended up hitting row z.

Bit low on effort for the "Club you loved since a boy". If it were one of us we would try our bollocksoff. He couldnt care and is content to pick up 30k a week.

It'd be nice if somebody can dig out a pic of him from when he was first breaking into the 1st team.. I remember him as a skinny, normally built lad back then.. I wonder what are we feeding him

I love the fact that Smith hasn't had a shot yet.  He is without doubt the worst player I've ever seen in a Newcastle shirt.

Well someone should do that to Shola.

 

He'd think they had the wrong number tbf.

 

just make sure he gives an affirmative when you say "Areet, is that Shola", then launch into it...

Here's a player who has at least given us SOME sort of service, in his goals, assists and has actually won us games and got us some points, compared to Smith, Carr, etc.

 

He seems to have become an easy target, with only his negative points (of which there are several) being taken into account when he's spoken of. Yes, he should not be here; yes, he's pretty shite, but still unpredictable, and has and is still capable of giving more to the team than Smith ever will.

 

Lay the fuck off him. If he doesn't want to leave, let him rot in the reserves. All this "phone him and tell him he's shite" is fuckin' childish.
