We must have spent 6-7 million combined on Best and Xisco yet neither of them could force their way into the team ahead of locals and free transfers. Just shows that going for the cheap option isn't necessarily going to save you much money.

Time for ranger, give him the experience, experience counts for s**** without talent ie harewood

The same Harewood who hit 20 goals in the Championship and 14 in the Premiership in single seasons?

Don't kid yourself, Ranger has a long, long way to go before I can see him hitting 20 in League 1. He's nowhere near good enough for this level.

Just to get it straight. I don't want to see any player injured, especially our own. I just don't want him playing.

Newcastle boss Hughton hopes for quick Leon Best return

Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton is optimistic that Republic of Ireland striker Leon Best will make a prompt recovery from his ankle injury.

Best, 23, is likely to miss Monday's season opener against Manchester United, but Hughton is hopeful that the problem is not serious.

"We're still assessing where he is," Hughton told BBC Newcastle.

"We hope it is not long term, but of course until we give it time to settle down then we won't know for sure."

The Nottingham-born forward arrived at St James Park from Coventry City in February.

But, despite having played his part in the Magpies' title success, he failed to register on the scoresheet.

However, he has enjoyed an impressive pre-season campaign for United, scoring in the games against Carlisle United and PSV Eindhoven.

Nice pic btw.

Imagine if Carroll gets injured

Or (far more likely) can't bear the pressure of being our number 9 at the tender age of 21, the one we are completely and utterly reliant on to keep us out of the relegation zone despite his inexperience and being completely unproven at this level...?

how long does it take to assess an injury at this club, saw this quote from hughton today regarding Best “We’re still assessing that one and we’ll make everybody aware when we know". the injury was supposed to have occured 1 week ago yet the extent of the injury is still a closely guarded secret, i'm sure this happned last transfer window, its as if they dont want to tell us about any long term injuries incase we expect us to bring in a replacement.

Probably pretty close to the truth with that. Oh, and we wouldn't want to encourage any bids for such a good player.

MIDDLESBROUGH are bidding to sign Newcastle striker Leon Best on a season-long loan deal.

Best almost signed for Gordon Strachan in January, only for a last-gasp call from Chris Hughton to take him to St James' Park instead.

Since the,n Best has struggled for opportunities at St James' Park and the signing of Hatem Ben Arfa has further pushed him down the pecking order.

Hughton has the in-form Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan, Shola Ameobi and Ben Arfa to get the goals to keep the Toon in the Premier League.

Boro need a goalscorer to kick-start their campaign and Strachan dropped summer signing Kris Boyd for the dramatic late win over Burnley.

He wants more firepower and knows Best well, having worked with him when he was a junior at Coventry.

2+2 like, but wouldn't mind him getting out on loan for some games.
