Tough match but over 90 mins and with the offensive threats we have we should be able to put them away. You know what you're going to get, shirt pulling, fouls, long throws into the box. Usual shite. They'll be a danger on free kicks and corners as always however. Lets be honest who on earth would pay for a season ticket to watch a side like Stoke play? We're hardly Barcelona but atleast we try and play. Whats worse is that Stoke fans seem to revel in this "nobody likes us or the way we play" image. cp40 Posted April 17, 2012 Share Posted April 17, 2012 I just hope that Pardew, for just one game, doesn't prepare a specific game-plan (and with it compromising the formation) to nullafy Pulis' anti-football pattern of play. In attack Stoke play for stoppages in their attacking half, and batter teams in the box. They're much more structured & methodical than the Wimbledon Crazy Gang teams, hence they're tough to prepare against. You just have to be mentally ready for the physical challenge etc that Stoke offers. Personally i think Pulis (at least on the field) is bringing the game into disrepute, and there are others too. I'm not Mancini's biggest fan, but fair play to him for recently refusing to to acknowledge him (shake his hand iirc) post game. The football Pulis coaches (or the dog's breakfast that it is) isn't in the spirit of the game,. It's impossible to dock them points but looking at the bigger picture the FA has to grow some balls and set a precedent, for the good of the game in this country - at least from a player development aspect, and we're far behind the Germans atm. If clubs like Stoke willingly & continue to employ an anti-football philosophy, by employing specialist anti-football coaches as a means of ensuring they pick up their annual slice of the premiership moneytrain, then penalise them financially. The likes of Pulis & Allardyce (ie. survival specialists, who are the anti-thesis of actually developing players technically), with their ideas, will eventually be phased out of the game if clubs come to the realisation that they're poisoned chalices. hello stoke fan here so dont bite my head of please i must say i havent laughed so hard in my life after reading this ! i cant belive youve got the nerve to even start to slate stoke im not being funny mate but neewcastle arent gods gift to football and to slate stoke for playing a style of football that suits them is amazing !and I wonder if two of their players scrapping and ripping each others shirts is a better way to 'play the game.' I could understand if you for example, a manager inherited a set of players, two of them were big lads upfront. So you'd play to that strength of course. But when, like Pulis, you have been there for years and you purposely go out your way to buy these players and you choose to play that style of football, how exactly does it suit the team/club!? It's so far from football man and it will never ever bring success. It can only get you so far and it's appalling to watch. Can't wait for stoke to get relegated. Tyson makes a great point, teams like stoke are holding back football development in this country I've commented on this elsewhere, but under Pulis' watch they'll never be relegated. Pulis' team is more structured and athletically gifted in comparison with Wimbledon, whose anti-football philosophy eventually caught up with them. The TV rights pie, and the general volume of incoming revenues, will ensure that Pulis' will have just enough in the kitty - to attract a better calibre of athlete, which are suited to his smashmouth football. Stoke will always be better equipped, and they'll sneak up on just enough teams, acquiring the necessary amount of points along the way. The first half of the campaign is key for them though, pre- Christmas that is. Their style of play, over the course of 50 games, must be physically and more importantly mentally taxing for the players. Having the art of anti-football drilled into you a few times a week would hardly be a satisfying workplace experience. A campaign over in Stoke must be a long & laborous one. Probably the longest in the top flight, and this isn't purely reflective on number of games played. It's down to the points I've alluded to.But a physically & mentally fresh Stoke outfit will at least lay down a solid foundation (points) pre-Christmas. bumped, for oatcakejamie's benefit. I am tempted to play Perch alongside Colo, but especially against Stoke I think we gonna need the heigh of Williamson. Perch could also be used beside Tiote, but at home against an average team I would play Guthrie. We say against Bolton how Perch didnt quite fit in, because we had the ball too much. Benwell Lad Posted April 17, 2012 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Although I couldn't watch it regularly, a couple of times a season playing against a Stoke or an old Wimbledon set up is quite interesting. Their up and at 'em style often keeps the crowd on the edge of their seats and is arguably a better spectacle than the dreary keep possession and make countless passes in your own half while never actually threatening style employed by Swansea, which is so admired by many. I really enjoyed our game away to Stoke this season where we beat them by playing football but also beat them at their own game, outfighting them in the scraps, and Danny Simpson's ball drying routine towards the end was just the icing on the cake.
