I would find it very strange if we were going to use him on the left in a 4-3-3, since his best and preferred position is clearly up top. If we have in fact put in a bid for this lad it wouldn't surprise me at all to see us play 4-4-2 next season.

Nothing more to see here tbh

We've put a bid in, it will be rejected!

Until an improved offer is made this won't get close to completion

Wonder how much we'll get for Simpson. Keep forgetting we might get a bit for Forster too.

I thought we would see nothing, given he is out of contract and 25.

Simpson is contracted until 2013. Forster 2014.

Surely we get something for the former?

 I thought he was actually out of contract, rather than just a dispute.

Tall lad isn't he. Scores a good few headers as #9.

How would he fit into a 4-3-3, out of interest?

Exactly where Ba plays atm, he can play both wide roles and behind the main striker as well as CF.

This I don't get.

He has played as the main striker for FC Twente this season and scored 25 goals in the league in 33 games. Ola John has played on one flank all season and Nacer Chadli (or Emir Bajrami) on the other flank. Luuk de Jong has basically played in a central position all season... and we have most likely had a scout watching him 10+ games this season. And he would fit into our left flank? Not to sure about that...

Aye he's played CF most of this season but he has played there during his career...... if we wanted him to play on the left of a front 3 he could easily do it.

Although i wonder with attacking fullbacks and DM's being linked would we consider trying to copy City's 4-2-2-2 system with Cabaye and Ben Arfa in Silva and Nasri roles, Tiote and maybe Anita in Barry and Yaya's roles and obviously De Jong and Cisse upfront.

Obviously all assuming on my part and probably wont even be considered but with those type of players it could be pulled off.

it means even if ba were to leave we'd have de jong and cisse to play two up front if we wanted or one or the other up front centrally in a 3 or on their own. we have a long season ahead.

The much more likely scenario and probably the one that will happen rather than FM fantasy dream land post.

Based on what really? What I mean is, the reason we are paying £8M for him is his ability, his potential, but mostly the 25 league goals he scored last season. He didn't do that as a left winger, but as a striker.

It just seems strange, signing a prolific goalscorer and playing him as a left winger.

fwiw if this move comes off i don't think the idea would be to replace demba but he may feel that he won't get the games in the position he wants and he may choose to move should that clause get activated.

Yep. The solitary year will probably mean a reduced fee, but I could still see us getting a couple of million for him.

Paranoid as fuck but I hope this isn't the start of clubs repeatedly making our interest public on the sly to generate more interest.  I know he's not exactly an unknown but there'll be a few clubs who'll think "Well if Newcastle are willing to stump up that much cash for him then they must have done their homework, etc".

Still though, an encouraging move by the club and the noises about Debuchy are equally as encouraging.  Have every faith our squad will be better than last year's.

I'm still hoping for redknapp to trigger the clause in ba's contract

That i have seen him play there before this season.... yes he's played mainly CF this season but he has played outwide before too and is capable od doing so.

We have been scouting him for a very long time, considering we were first linked with him before Ba signed, so iam sure we have seen him play outwide as well as the main CF.

Personally if we sign him he will play on the left of a front 3 as i think we will play 4-3-3 next season or a variation of it.

I cant see us playing 4-4-2 tbh, if we do sign him he will just take Ba's place in the lineup who will almost certainly be on his way.

Pards wants his teams to have 2 out and out goal scorers on the pitch at most time and injuries are possible with number of games so Ba and Cisse is not enough depth even with rotation. De Jong is young and will take time to get used to the premier league so I imagine would largely come off the bench for us to begin with, and with cups and europa will have plenty of game time. Assuming he comes good he may replace Ba who may be off by then if not this summer, and potentially (though hopefully not) Cisse.

I don't see the issue really, we are going to be playing a lot of games, and we'd all like not only to do well in the Europa league but make better impact in cups. Pards has already said that for this season he will have to rotate the squad as he goes a lot more this season rather than just playing players until he has to change them for injury. Equally the club needs to accomodate for the possibiility of Cisse or Ba getting injured, or even if Ba's seeming confidence loss is more serious and he could become a Torres for one (albeit one we got for free).

However doubt we'll get him for £8m.

I'm excited for those who haven't seen this yet, btw. Nowt like waking up on a morning and seeing a thread title like that, with pages already into the double figures.

Ian Dennis ‏@Iandennisbbc

The approach by #NUFC for Luuk De Jong was made last week. Twente officially refused to confirm or deny the story #bbcfootball

Wonder why the BBC didn't break it then.

They're always like this journalists. 'Oh yeah I knew that. I just decided not to say anything.'

Dont see how we'd accomodate all 3 strikers and Ben Arfa consistantly. One or other would surely be on bench quite often & wouldnt stay happy.

I know De Jong's an international and is coming off the back of a great season; but he's still only 21. We might not see him as an immediate starter. Whether he would accept something like that remains to be seen, particularly if he has other offers on the table. I just don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility that we're after another 'big-name' striker to go with what we've got.

It's not mate, people are assuming that Ashley is going to be true to form in the face of overwhelming evidence that you just can't predict what the man's gonna do. Bidding for De Jong could well mean that Ba is off, but there's equally as much chance of us having both on the books next season imo.
