Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was delighted with his young guns as they inspired the Magpies to a narrow 1-0 Europa League win over Club Brugge at St James' Park.

Pardew made nine changes to the side that drew 1-1 at fierce rivals Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League and his fringe players certainly did not disappoint as Newcastle went three points clear atop Group D.

Gabriel Obertan scored the only goal of the game three minutes after the interval after excellent work from 20-year-old Sammy Ameobi, who was a constant menace for the Belgian side's defenders, while Shane Ferguson also shone.

"It was a great performance because that's a good team,'' Pardew told ESPN.

"They keep the ball very, very well and that's why they're top of the league, they've got experience in the team.

"But our young players shone tonight and that's what it was about. I showed faith in them because they've been doing it on the training ground.

"Do it on the training ground and you've got a chance of performing on the big stage and Sammy and Fergie have been terrific in training and they took it into the game and that's perfect for a manager.''

Pardew singled out goalscorer Obertan for special praise and added they have been grateful for the Frenchman's last two performances after he also sparkled in the Toon's last European encounter against former club Bordeaux.

"This is a guy that everybody thinks is 26, 27 because he's been in the English game so long,'' Pardew added.

"He's hardly played any games, he's still only 23. He has a fantastic future and the last two European games we owe him a big debt because we wouldn't have won without him.

"He's been terrific for us and hopefully he'll play a bigger part in the Premier League as we go along.''

Glad Pardew made the point about the amount of games Obertan has played, he may be 23 but he left France early and barely played for Man Utd then went to be a bit part for us (a fair amount early on).

I get a bit swept up at times but he could turn out better than most of us expect.

The formational switch/substitution was a double-edged sword, we needed to do it because there was no impetus going forward but it allowed them to have a lot more of the ball in midfield 2nd half.

Some extremely sloppy play and some really promising moments mixed in together in a game that was very dull for large stretches. Getting a bit bored of us grinding out narrow victories like.

It has been going on many years tbh (in Europe), tonight was a massive reminder of games when we were last in Europe and we absolutely bummed teams but still ended up scraping a 1-0, 2-1 etc..

Strawberry corner kept singing the "Jimmy Savile, he's Cattermole's dad" chant non-stop tonight as well.  Canny pathetic IMO.

Only thing worse was the "your support is fucking shit"/"shit club, shit fans" chants to 4,000 people that had come from Belgium.

The effort was great but aye, some of the chants were absolutely fucking rubbish. Slagging off the Belgians was particularly cringe-worthy. Were you in Row K/L circa seat 60-ish btw?

It's embarrassing, it makes no sense, shows no wit and is generally shit. Reckon 75% of the songs tonight were about the mackems n all.

The latter isn't much better.

Row K, seat 12.

Behind some people with thick Burra accents, who found the Cattermole chant hilarious and joined in.  I was in stitches.

You get the impression those that went to the game all had to have a kick right in the bollocks as they walked out the ground, a rapid descent in opinion since those who went to the game have got back

Quite enjoyed it tbh. Never looked like losing it and we knocked it about well at times. Wasn't perfect and you could tell we made 9 changes from the derby but to roll over a good Belgian team in that manner with that set of players is decent imo. Loads of purples rested for Sunday and we've got 7 out of 9 in Europe.

Not sure what more people want tbh. :dontknow:

didnt like it when it started on sunday

and re the mackem chants, it pisses me off, my seats in the strawberry corner at the back, but at the bordeaux game i decided to go for the halfway line east stand, pretty much because the corner gets full of young'ns who it seems are trying to prove something or other by chanting as many anti mackem things as possible

It seems that whenever we play a cup/European game at home, pretty much every song is about the mackems. Which I find a bit irritating. I hate them as much as anyone, but we're in Europe ffs...fuck 'em! Must be all the hate filled radgies who see these games, along with the reserve games, as a chance to recreate Green Street the film.
