I think the Gough spelling possibly derived from the Goffe spelling during the civil war. After William Goffe went on the lamb after being a party to lopping Charles heed off...

I know he got s*** for Monday but he was much better out wide today. Stuck wider, had pace and power and managed to beat his man with some consistency.

 

I was at a different game, he looked disinterested for the most part and only got involved once we'd scored and only then because Janmaat got into more useful overlapping positions forcing him to play. I felt he was going through the motions. The whole team played at around 80% and that's just not good enough (Janmaat was a bit better).
