geordiesteve710
They'll easily be safe. Far too many winnable home games combined with the Defoe factor for them to really be in danger. They might even win the NETD super-heavyweight-challenge-all-comers-undisputed-championship Grand slam of derby win AND finishing above us. Expect rivers of emotional tears and a spate of newborns named 'Gustavo'
Teasy
They've already had the likes of Hull, Everton, Swansea and Stoke at home this season and they've won a grand total of 1 game at home so far (out of 11 games). Defoe's going to have to have a huge impact if they're to start winning enough to stay up easily.
midds
Haven't seen much of Sunderland this year but from what I can gather they're not particularly great at breaking teams down who are fairly well organised. They can definitely soak pressure up and are organised themselves but the remaining home games they're going to have to actively look to take the initiative, get at teams and force the pace. That doesn't really lend itself to the things they're good at so on the face of it the lesser teams at home should be banker wins but it may well not work out like that. Jack Flash
Sunderland’s capture of Jermain Defoe could just be the best piece of transfer business done in the January transfer window, ever. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/sunderland/11347954/Sunderlands-signing-of-Jermain-Defoe-would-be-the-best-January-transfer-signing-ever.html

Guest antz1uk
I was going to say Ivan Campo, but the realised he was a summer transfer, however on having a look i came across this, not Sunderland related like, maybe go in the NWOAT http://lionofviennasuite.sbnation.com/2012/10/22/3539990/ivan-campo-pens-new-letter-to-bolton-faithful
jdckelly
Cisse scored in 8 consecutive games or something but it's all about Jermain true but we were around the european spots when he signed (were we 5th?) and finished in the european spots so while he was good it didn't exactly vastly improve our fortunes. Long term deals the best is surely Vidic and Evra considering they were mainstays of the man utd team for 8 years and what they won in that time. Mikel Arteta was pretty damn good too for Everton. Hanshithispantz
In other words, they have swapped a player with Toronto who, with the best will in the world, had become a joke on Wearside – albeit a fondly thought of one – for the closest thing you can get to guaranteeing goals in English football. This forum is definitely hosted on some parallel universe like.

That's a very good point, and there are a few teams like that nowadays in the PL. We were under Pardew, only sometimes not that good at soaking up pressure, but explains beating teams like Chelsea and such. Stoke are built in that manner too, look at their results and they do better against the better teams than expected and are often disappointing against the weaker teams. I think Southampton may be the best example of doing this right, even against us we had 16 shots and 56% possession to their 5 shots, yet still go the result. Too many teams now adopt this negative mindset and when required to change can't do it. Sunderland struggle more than others because of the quality of their forward players, who bar the t*** that keeps scoring against us are pretty dire. They've attempted to remedy that by adding Defoe, which will probably be enough this year to keep them up considering the likes of Hull, Leicester, Burnley, Aston Villa and QPR are their competition. TheHoob
Mental how much money they spunk up the wall. Most of my sunderland supporting mates say they'd rather have Gardner back than £10 million Rodwell.

He's a half decent albeit lightweight 10, couldn't have been more unsuited to the way the play from the off given he doesn't have the fitness or graft to play in their back 9. Skeletor
At least they are prepared to invest money into the squad. They have bought some shite, but they may well get it right one day. Not likely. The reason they have to spend that much money (fees and wages) is because they're an unattractive prospect for players.
