Dummett’s nowhere near the level of any of those though. This is more like the equivalent of keeping people like Ramage & Chopra until their 30s.

Howe really is moulding the squad around personality sometimes even at the cost of ability, he wants to have that balance. Will be interesting to see how far he can take us with this philosophy.

I think it's critical. Hence Klopp talking about mentality monsters and such. It's what separates the winners from the losers at the top end.

The sooner the right culture is built the better, because if losers and nutters get entrenched in your club's early successes, it's a tricky situation trying to move them on while not losing the position you've already attained.

Going back to Robson, we had a great squad under him, but it wasn't quite great enough, especially mentally. But switching Dyer, Jenas, Robert and several others for players of similar technical skill but higher quality mindsets was a big challenge. The club overall (meaning all the stakeholders, like Freddie Shepherd etc.) didn't have the quality to manage it, and we fell away instead.

Successful teams often have them. Man United kept the likes of (Phil) Neville, O'Shea and Fletcher about for years. Even Liverpool now with the likes of Milner and Henderson. They're not the most talented, but they play their part.

Milner and Henderson were and still are ten times the players Dummett has ever been, with the added bonus of not being injured most of the time either.

The question had nothing to do with Dummet, it was How far can Howe take us by moulding a squad around personality.

Ramage maybe, but Chopra, come on man, the ideal rolemodel for young footballers everywhere, eh ?

as someone who treats the ball like it's been inflated with novichok, I just can't see how he fits into Howe's squad, even as a back up.

can only assume he's being kept on as a good trainer/cheerleader and we'll hopefully never have to see him on the pitch again. he'll probably get crocked again anyway which will see to that.

Apparently prolific as a striker during his early days, which is worrying when there's been little or no mention of an incoming striker.

A stop gap until Mbappe perhaps?

In the chronicle article, he stated that in the Liverpool game when he scored and we drew 2-2, Suarez said he would give him his shirt but Tiote just took it off him. Cabaye, being the nice guy he is, offered Dummett his Gerrard top.

Can imagine no one dared to question Tiote in the changing rooms and him not caring
