Village Idiot
Giuseppe Signori was my favorite Italian player when I was young. Never won a trophy.
matta
Beardsley. Think he is to blame for my Newcastle love if i think about it.
Mole_Toonfan
NUFC one would be Shearer, after that the NON-NUFC ones would probably be Ronaldo or Batistuta.

joeyt
Giuseppe Signori was my favorite Italian player when I was young. Never won a trophy. Loved him. Used to do a Ravenelli celebration when playing football too
r0cafella
Giuseppe Signori was my favorite Italian player when I was young. Never won a trophy. That one step penalty. I remember wanting to emulate Paolo Montero
Keefaz
Keegan, for reasons too obvious to mention. He was top closely followed by Ian Rush. :s
Yorkie
Obviously Shearer. Difficult to pick someone out after that. I absolutely adored Nobby but that probably came later when I appreciated 'technique' more. He wouldn't be near the top but I loved Big Dunc n'all. He's probably the first big signing I can properly remember (other than Al). Can remember his debut against Wimbledon really well. Like I say, probably the first big, exciting signing that made an immediate impression that I remember. Unfortunately I think Owen was a hero of mine, purely cos of WC'98. He probably was second only to Shearer.

NewJerseyMag
Keegan followed closely by Beardsley. The comparison with the drivel served up to day is depressing.
Guest
Strange one but Roy Aitken. I was only 5-6 at the time and have no recollection of even seeing him play, but knew the whole team etc by heart. I remember watching Italia 90 in awe at the fact there was a Newcastle player on TV playing in this competition.

henke
Chris Waddle. I followed his career closely when he went to Spurs and especially at Marseille. Might be a bit difficult for our younger viewers to grasp but following european football was not easy in the late 80's, but i'd set the video whenever there was anything on tv. Then when satellite telly came along it was a revelation. I've had a soft spot for Marseille ever since Waddle signed and when they reached the champions cup final in '91 i was up for it as if it were NUFC. Almost. Possibly the poorest game ever though. Edit, think darko pancev played in that game, he was class.
Guest Howaythetoon
http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02112/Andy_Cole_2112471i.jpg Those were the days like, growing up, just getting into football, becoming a teenager, the halcyon days for me and perhaps the modern NUFC. Away from Newcastle probably my first non Toon hero was Romario. Today... there are no heroes really, because most players are either twats, mercenaries or just plain fucking boring. Mind, I really admire Colo as a player, character and Toon current starter.
Vinny Green Balls
http://www.football-history.net/pics/players/johan-cryuff-1974-world-cup-argentina.jpg This man. When I was 4-5, we used to see him play for the Washington Diplomats. The game I remember the most was against Beckenbauer and the New York Cosmos. RFK stadium was packed, and the atmosphere was incredible.
Jill
Andy Cole. I was gutted when he left, it felt like my first "lesson" on the business side of football.
Guest n4e
Ferdinand is the first I was really into. Used to always want to black myself up to look like him as well, thankfully was never allowed! Got a lot of Luis Enrique Barca strips as well, although I think that was more my mother trying to force that on me.

Vinny Green Balls
Zico... As good as it gets... When I was a little older, he and Platini became my favorites. Still remember that shit game against Italy in the '82 world Cup. Brazil really should have won the World Cup that year. And worse, the France-Germany semifinal. The most horrendous call in World Cup history when Shumacher took out Battiston.
