I absolutely adored Nobby but that probably came later when I appreciated 'technique' more. He wouldn't be near the top but I loved Big Dunc n'all. He's probably the first big signing I can properly remember (other than Al). Can remember his debut against Wimbledon really well. Like I say, probably the first big, exciting signing that made an immediate impression that I remember. Unfortunately I think Owen was a hero of mine, purely cos of WC'98. I was only 5-6 at the time and have no recollection of even seeing him play, but knew the whole team etc by heart. Might be a bit difficult for our younger viewers to grasp but following european football was not easy in the late 80's, but i'd set the video whenever there was anything on tv. Then when satellite telly came along it was a revelation. I've had a soft spot for Marseille ever since Waddle signed and when they reached the champions cup final in '91 i was up for it as if it were NUFC. Almost. Possibly the poorest game ever though. Away from Newcastle probably my first non Toon hero was Romario. Today... there are no heroes really, because most players are either twats, mercenaries or just plain fucking boring. When I was 4-5, we used to see him play for the Washington Diplomats. The game I remember the most was against Beckenbauer and the New York Cosmos.
