So the 25 man squad is looking

like this:

Definites:

Pope, Dubravka, Gillespie

Trippier, Krafth, Botman, Burn, Schar, Lascelles, Dummett, Lewis, Targett

Bruno, Joelinton, Willock, Shelvey, S Longstaff

ASM, Fraser, Wilson, Wood,

so I make that 21 definites and then the following:

Expected to leave:

Darlow, Clark, Fernandez, Hendrick, Ritchie, Gayle

TBCs: Murphy, Almiron, Anderson, Manquillo, M Longstaff

Assuming we sign a RW and a striker, then we can either sign one more player or put in one of the “TBCs” (or two if Anderson is classed as an U21)

Think two of Fraser, Murphy & Almiron will stay this summer, probably Fraser plus one other. One will go, the other upgraded.

It's all about the midfield signing and what Howe sees Bruno's role as imo. He's potentially shown in the second half of last season that he's too good to be restricted to playing that deep.

I agree, I’d be gutted to see him lose his goal threat

With Hendrick and Clark going this week, we're at 29 senior players:

GK

Pope

Dúbravka

Darlow

Gillespie

RB
Trippier
Krafth
Manquillo

CB

Schär

Lascelles

Botman

Burn

Fernandez

LB

Targett

Dummett

Lewis

CM

Willock

S. Longstaff

Guimarães

Shelvey
Joelinton

M. Longstaff

RW/LW

Fraser
Almirón
Ritchie
Saint-Maximin

Murphy

ST

Wilson

Wood

Gayle

--

Gayle is obviously next on the chopping block, but that still leaves us at 28. I've got Darlow or Gillespie (seems like the latter is staying), Manquillo or Lewis (seems like the former is more likely), Fernandez, M. Longstaff, and Ritchie as the ones to shift as a priority, which would leave room for two senior signings.

Ones in bold are the ones we need to shift next.

If the season was to start tomorrow, we've got 8 clear first-choices, 3 positions where it's a 50-50 choice (I think it should be 4 but it's obvious Pope is number 1).

Pope

Trippier

Targett

Botman

Schar/Burn

Bruno

Joelinton

Shelvey/Willock

Saint-Maximin

Fraser/Almiron

Wilson

Schar probably gets in on left-foot/right-foot balance.

Probably means nowt, but didn't Botman replace Lascelles and play on the right of Burn, until Schar replaced burn. I think Burn will always play on the left due to his comfort in the FB position. Think Botman is still raw enough to benefit from playing either roles.

I think we will go with Botman and Burn first game like.

I'll be gobsmacked and confused if we did that. I like Burn but he's clumsy and Schar provides more balance for obvious reasons. He also generally just brings far more to the team, including a decent goals return for a CB.

I think the stats point to Burn being the better defender though; significantly more progressive passes and aerial duels won iirc. In saying this, I do reckon Howe will go for the right-footer on the right side, which makes sense.

The only worry I have about Schar is his lack of pace, Burn when tired is also prone to a mistake. It is deffo going to be Botman with one of those two partnering him.

Personaly, I would go with Burn, I prefer his aggression and height.

Howe has confirmed Lascelles will remain as captain. You'd imagine Trippier will take the armband when he's not playing.

Obviously - that means hes not getting sold either.
