Ashley seems to want to sabotage his own investment so can anyone explain why he does this ?

Because in the short term the rewards of investing just aren't there.

The cost of competing nearer the top is a project that will take time and cost a couple of hundred million up front over 2/3 seasons but a chunk straight away (like all of the telly money for the year right now).

He doesn't care about the long term 10-15 years because he won't be here then. Building up a brand and diversifying it around the world takes time...You need to spend to win some things and you need to spend to enlarge the global footprint of the club which essentially means even at a modest pace putting 50-70m into the club over and above what it makes for a few years. He won't do it because as he sees it there is no profit in it for him (not in the short term anyway).

When a few years ago he talked about those 5 year plans he was talking about a club in profit by a few million a year, selling the odd player who had made good and him putting in a few million. That went out the window when bigger money came into the PL and wages and prices of players went up due to the huge TV money. Clubs all over Europe started doubling their transfer fees etc...Basically the stakes went up even for a modest improvement of the club and at that point Ashley checked out.

Looking at his previous articles the chap hasn't ever been a fan of Benitez.

PS: he said this mid-January:

In the meantime, if the right player – or players – become available during the January window that’s a bonus, but if no signings are forthcoming there’s no need to panic.

So let’s hold our nerve, keep our powder dry and then once promotion is assured, that’s the time for Mike Ashley’s cheque book to come out.

The thing I don't understand with Ashley is that we are guaranteed right now at least £100 million TV money. If you give Rafa half that right now he would keep us up, and with next season that £50 million gives us at least what, £210 million? The Premier League is littered with serious money right now, it makes absolutely no sense to spend some of it to guarantee it keeps coming.

That's not a bad article. He's spent money on utter shite.

This is spot on.

Last season’s Championship winning campaign was for the most part, a series of uninspiring performances with the Newcastle manager’s negative tactics grinding out results when a more expansive attacking formation – especially at home – would surely have brought the same end result but with a flourish, rather than a sense of relief.

It's moronic shite from someone who has no ability at all to comprehend the work that actually goes on at a football club outside of picking the teamsheat.

If he could just flick a switch and blow teams away with 2 up top he would have done it, he chose to go with his tried and tested method. It worked. It would work this season too if he was allowed to build a Premiership squad.

Some signings haven't been great, but he signed players last year to do a job - get promotion. We did it very comfortably and had money to spare from the players we sold last year. We started this season with a championship squad and Rafa has had peanuts (in PL terms) to try and sort it out. Also worth remembering he generally hasn't been able to bring in the players he wants.

Seen a few people criticise Rafa for poor transfers lately and it's a load of c**p. Yes there have been some odd ones, but does he really deserve to be criticised to this extent when A. his transfers did their job last year B. He's so far not performed miracles with a typically pathetic Ashley budget?

On promotion we needed 5 first team players we got one: Lejeune. That is the beginning and end of the story. Rafa basically had Reina and Abraham in the bag and the club fucked it up. Both are better than the players we have in those positions now. That's not me writing Joselu off...Abraham has the pace and close control to not only keep back lines deep he looks like the type that can manufacture chances for the team.

Anyone remember when we were in the Championship and had to convince players to come to play at that level?

Anyone remember when we were in the Championship and scored as many goals as anyone else in the league, with the best goal difference of anyone?

Anyone remember why we are called deluded and expect too much too soon?

We're a club being rebuilt after a decade of almost complete mismanagement. It'll take time. There will be lots of signings that don't work out (like every manager in history has had), and this is made worse when your first choice targets aren't being funded or are allowed to slip away. There will be plenty of matches where we have to grind out results, because for at least this season, staying up is everything. Literally nothing else matters, certainly not attractive football. Everyone wants us to score loads of goals, but it isn't always possible.

Honestly, boils my piss that people are so impatient. Sometimes I think we deserve all the fucking pelters we get.

Yeah but don't forget Abraham would have cost £200m and Ashley can't afford that.

Rafa wanted to go out and improve with the likes of Townsend in January and wasn't backed. Had he been backed we probably would have walked the rest of the season.

According to Mark Douglas' book, he wanted Townsend, Loftus-Cheek and Delph in January, all on loan (albeit with loan fees) and clauses in their contracts that if we were promoted, their transfers would all be made permanent for an additional fee on top of that. Promotion effectively sealed and half of the recruitment for the summer done in January. Why they didn't go ahead with that I've no fucking clue, absolute cunts...

What he wants and what is realistically possible are 2 different things mind.

Palace absolutely kippered us and fair play to them over Townsend, they had zero intention of selling him back to us and out us on a wild goose chase.
