Arnautovic and Rabiot

A couple of twats, will be a good match

Seriously, is it that Man United don't have any kind of recruitment team or setup?

All those years Ferguson was doing well, was he just doing it all himself and there was nothing in place behind the scenes infrastructure wise?

What an absolute mess man. Why don't they try and get in some young talents? Crikey.

Impossible to say, but you don't really need a big or good recruitment team to lap up the best players in the domestic top league and snap up the most highly rated youth players from top teams around Europe like Man Utd could back then and consistently did, but not anymore, so it could be that it's always been a poor recruitment setup.

Things have changed. In the past you could have talent scouts that uncover some gems from lower leagues. Nowadays even if you manage to find some, they normally have agents already and will ask for big wages. Their club would also demand much higher fees than before.

Yeah, they probably have more than 50 people employed as scouts and recruitment analysts but Ten Hag appears to only trust players that he knows. Seems like another awful appointment for them.. Starting with a Eriksen as a false 9 in the PL

I had big respect for that total football side he had at Ajax in his first couple of years but it looks like Ten Hag might not have been the architect of that, as he dismantled it. Guy seems like he's never seen a Man Utd (or PL) match in his life. And yes, Lisandro Martinez will never be a good defender in the PL.

They had scouts back then, but not quite like today nor the data analysis, other scouting tools etc. It was a case of Fergie looking at a top player (Yorke, Sheringham, Rooney, Veron, Ruud, Stam and so on) and saying get him and they could afford it and he usually didn’t have many flops in terms of his bigger signings, plus they had the class of 92’ as the core of their side for so long and other talent from the academy always coming through, Wes Brown, O’Shea, Welbeck et al.

It seems they now have a similar approach, in that they look at a player and think he’s good, let’s buy him, without any thought about how to fit them in or what it means for the team overall, either short-term or long term. Fergie had a knack of knowing a player would fit and if not he’d make them fit. They are a basket case of a club. Their new manager won’t last the season.

Man United are a complete shambles if they're seriously going for him. The fuck is going on? Thats something we'd have done under Ashley in pure desperation. It really looks like more of the same from them this season if not worse.

Even MA wouldn't sanction such a move due to his age. I genuinely can't believe it

I think Mourinho nailed it best, they have to let the manager recruit his own scouting team and use the club’s own in-house scouting tools in line with that and then let the manager identify the players he wants/needs. He’s doing that now at Roma and Conte is doing it at Spurs. We don’t have the scouting tools quite yet in house, but are working on it, but we have a manager who is in sync with his/our scout/s and now our new DOF, the owners and his own staff and he is getting the type of players we need and in areas that are required. They may not be top names or even top of our list, but it’s not random scattergun signings just for the sake of it that will go wasted or flop and lose us big money.

I'm sure I heard Neville say over the weekend that they've got about 60 scouts. It's either the easiest gig ever or the most frustrating.

Most will be freelance who will scout for other clubs, but will get maybe more coin if they recommend a player to one particular club over the other if that player gets signed. Not many clubs have a dedicated in house scouting team. I wish Mandoon was around he could maybe clarify. Many clubs will work with agents first or most over scouts for example as well. It’s hard to tell with Man Utd though, their recruitment has been shocking for a club of their size, stature, prestige and the money they can pay in transfer fess and offer in wages.

Eddie Howes nephew is one of our scouts IIRC.

Aye that’s true and a manager needs his own team too, as does a club, we are lucky ours seem to all be in sync.
