Super Duper Branko Strupar
Well, shit. Was hoping for a minor miracle and him to return earlier than predicted.

I don’t get this “there’s no strikers out there”. Did we place a bid for a striker other than Ekitike? Can’t remember too many. I still think Wood is Howe’s choice and he’s content with him to see out the season, the lack of intensity in our striker search gave me that feeling. Ekitike was the punt, he just didn't fancy it. It's difficult to sign a striker at the best of times, never mind in January, in a relegation scrap, with a misfit crew handling negotiations, rival clubs playing funny buggers etc. as far as Wilson is concerned, if we stay up, I'd be looking to move him on in the Summer. he's a crock and not even that good. xLiaaamx
Mavididi has 8 goals this season, is an English lad playing in France and his brother is in our academy. Cannot understand why we didn't make that happen.

andycap
Personally I think gayle is finished when Wilson originally got injured he stuck maxi up top instead of playing gayle. Got to be miggy in my book he scored a fair few at atlanta didn't he? Plus his pace will be much needed aswell as his runs.

In terms of U21 strikers Westendorf would be most suited to help in emergency. Stephenson has more experience but he's stick thin where as Westendorf is much more imposing. Great signing It's an odd situation that I can't quite figure out. This kid is not another Nacho Gonzalez. He was/is highly rated in Mexico and has been chased by the US and Mexico at international level. The idea he's not even getting a kick for our youths makes no sense even if there's talk of an injury. Edited February 7, 2022 by Thiago
Hanshithispantz
Regarding Joelinton up top, there's ways to probably make it work like but he would need goalscorers around him, which we don't really have.
mighty__mag
Wood Gayle ASM All can play in his absence. The idea of Murphy and Almiron as Strikers is ridiculous, and keep Joelinton where he is, he's doing great in midfield.
Guest
Probably going to have to sell him in the summer like. Can’t afford to carry him if he’s going to miss half of each season.
The College Dropout
2 hours ago, Dandy Man said: There were massive deficiencies across all areas of the team that needed addressing and those largely got addressed, if a striker had been the only problem area then fair enough they fucked up but they did sign one striker for 25 million (bad value or otherwise) and clearly tried to get at least one more of similar value. It's obviously a non ideal situation to be in right now, but it's hardly a shambles or a massive dereliction of duty when we've reinforced with genuine quality across several positions in the hardest period of year to buy any players, it's certainly nowhere near the levels of shambles of the last 14 years anyway. But people love complaining. As I understand. We were £5m or so away from landing Lingard. It was never worth the risk to walk away imo. I have some blame for Howe on this. He should've pushed hard for another attacker.

Man U didn’t want us to take him, especially once the Greenwood thing kicked off. They were also scared of strengthening a future rival. What’s going on with your opinions today? cubaricho
Worrying developments for sure, but we haven't seen the style of play with the new lads in yet. It might end up being a system that eventually really works to Gayle's favor, might bring more goals from dudes like ASM and Fraser, Willock or Miggy might be way further up the pitch adding to the goals. That being said, we should've definitely brought in another striker.

The version we have seen mostly, schlepped around the pitch in every position other than his best, I am not sure if that player we bought is still there. The fact he wasn't moved out this window and that Howe is usually all over him (see after the Leeds game) tells me Howe does rate him still.
Nine
Gayle physically struggles badly since those 2 bad injuries when Rafa was here, theres a reason Howe played ASM up top instead of the actual striker in Gayle. Most of the time when I have seen him in the last 2/3 seasons he has looked scared to sprint, I don’t think he can start for a back to back run of games anymore. He’s just not really an option anymore sadly not to mention he doesnt fit the system that Howe likes to play with the pressing from the front against certain teams, however Gayle from 16/17 would have been great. HaydnNUFC
Gayle has lost a large chunk of his pace since he got those muscle injuries midway through 2016-17. I've always thought that his overall buildup play is decent; he has a fair leap on him to win headers and gets little touches and lay offs that link up with late runners. Almiron's goal away at Wolves in January 2020 a prime example. Just at PL level he can't hit a barn door. Remember being so frustrated at him unable to finish chances in 2017-18 even though his overall play outside the box was decent. Push comes to shove we're going to have play him, even though he should've been moved in 2018 or 2019.
gbandit
Gayle at least is a natural goalscorer who finds good positions. I have absolutely no idea what level he’s at now but he’s never been able to make it work in the premier league so there’s not much hope of it happening now. Especially without enough pace on both sides to help stretch defences on the break. I think our build-up play doesn’t lend itself to helping Gayle much as it’s so slow, however, Bruno will massively help with this. Anyway, provided Wood stays fit we won’t be seeing much if any of Gayle
TRon
Just feel that Gayle is the closest we've to to Wilson as a striker who will run onto the through balls into the spaces. Wood should be able to as well in theory, but he's looked pretty sluggish in the two games so far.
