Callum Wilson set to be out for around 8 weeks with new hamstring injury (Howe)

Would be a great option as a back up striker but it’s not really working with Isak having injuries as well. We need another striker and realistically, Wilson’s race is almost run given his age and injuries so we’ll need two strikers in the next year Id say. One as a proper back up to Isak and another as a development project

Unreal……this is why we definitely need to bring in another striker.

We’ll have to use Willock up too. Joelinton, all thought you’d expect him to fit the bill for being a target man, didn’t do too well. We’ll just have to depend on a runner, Gordon or Willock and getting those through balls to them.

I actually think he would’ve been high on the list for replacement when the new regime came in. He just managed to postpone it by finding the best form and fitness of his career.

Hoped against hope but really he was never going to last as a regular starter.

"Replace him in the summer".

It's not easy to replace a 15-goal-a-season PL striker.

Yep, and you have to think it'll swallow a lot if not all our summer budget, whatever is left of it after January.

We’re absolutely going to have to do loan signings in January. There’s no way around it sadly

The N-O Callum Wilson cycle begins again:

Run of goals - ‘best striker since Shearer’

Get injured - ‘needs replaced asap’

Returns with a run of goals - ‘best striker since Shearer’

Gets injured again - ‘needs replaced asap’

Those takes aren't mutually exclusive, though. His goal record is absolutely superb but he's incredibly unreliable in terms of availability, and when the other main striking option is also made of wet tissue paper you have to seriously question the situation as it doesn't feel long term tenable.

I really hope Wilson can get to second behind Shearer this season and ideally put up 50 league goals for us, but we do need to look at the striking roster and consider his position come the summer.

Both can be true in fairness

I’d personally keep him but under the understanding that he has no hope of playing more than one in three games or something or that he would only come on from 60 mins. However, I’d replace him in the sense of getting a second striker who is reliably fit even if they don’t have the same output as Callum just yet. I can’t see why he’d ever want to leave as his body won’t ever allow him to play more than games than he does for us
