TBF though, he’ll always look awful in games like this when we have so little of the ball. He doesn’t look sharp or fit to me, not sure if temporary or permanent. Sitting back and countering can be a valid tactic depending on the personnel at your disposal. But come on; it’s been proven in the last few years that, if you have the players, a well-organized high press is generally the winning formula. Unfortunately, for all his good attributes, Southgate is not at that elite level to execute this kind of game-plan. Which, based on the talent of this squad, means he’s not up to the task. He's set us up well, he seems to be a great man manger and he's created a brilliant atmosphere in the camp. It's just he leaves a bit to be desired as a tactician. Sifu Posted July 11, 2021 Share Posted July 11, 2021 Absolutely crucial that Jones remains part of the England coaching setup for next year's World Cup - Southgate needs that additional opinion/influence to balance out his conservative tactics. My overall feeling is Southgate is still the one for the job as his way of thinking is more suited to a tournament format rather than a club setting. This England team has done us proud this summer and you can't dismiss the good Southgate has done (managing the media well, getting that team spirit up and galvanising his players and the country); no-one is perfect though so some criticism does need to land at Southgate's door (namely the lack of any attacking nous in the second half and basically offering Italy to attack us). There are positives and negatives to take from this but ultimately, the main negative came at the wrong time. You'd hope we analyse what's gone right (and build on it) and what's gone wrong (and rectify it) and we'll be properly prepare for next year's World Cup.
