There was a great article on the Athletic last week about our set pieces, about the variations, choreographed blocking, misdirections, etc. we do.

Following on from it, yesterday we manufactured a free header for Joelinton that he should have scored and a free header for Lacelles that hit the back of the net. It was three or four passes after the free kick, so maybe won't count in the stats as a set piece, but was clearly us working the ball so it could be delivered from an unexpected angle to an unexpected target. That would be a set penis goal in my book.

People sure are making a lot of the 3 keepers thing.

We only get 5 subs that we can make per game, he's included 6 outfield players that he trusts (to differing degrees) to introduce into the pitch - given all 6 got on bar Parkinson, who had 25 mins at Bournemouth. He may well only trust the academy lads for short cameos or giving the senior lads a breather late on but he's clearly selected lads he can trust to do that rather than just populate the bench with lads who aren't ready and he won't ever use.

Granted there's like an absolute fractionally miniscule chance that we manage to go through Pope, Dubravka, Karius and Gillespie in one match due to injury or red cards but better to have them all sat there than empty seats. Imagine if our injury/suspension crisis suddenly extended to the goalkeeping department and we had an empty seat instead of a registered keeper we needed to use? There'd be hell on if we suddenly had to hoy an outfielder in net.

I understand there's a point to then be made about the depth/quality of our U23/academy if we can't scrape together another couple of lads who he can trust, but it's a long process to sort out the shambolic shell it was when we were bought 2 years ago and a lot of the promising ones are out on loan anyway.

It may just be that you get a bonus payment if you’re on the bench and Eddie didn’t want to give it to young lads who were nowhere near the first team squad.

Also six academy lads might have diluted the honour given to the three that made it.

Eddie Howe – We are sticking to our principles

An exhilarating afternoon at St James’ Park, Eddie Howe watching on from the touchline.

The Newcastle United Head Coach orchestrating yet another excellent performance from his team AND dominant victory.

Eddie Howe doing this in the most difficult of circumstances, with the injury list somehow ending up even worse after the international ‘break’ as Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock were added to that ever growing list, whilst Lewis Hall was unable to play either, due to being on loan from Chelsea.

Eddie Howe a proud man reflecting on what had been a massive achievement from himself and his players, the NUFC boss insisting that whatever is thrown at them, they are sticking to their ‘principles’ when tackling each and every match.

Eddie Howe reflecting on Newcastle 4 Chelsea 1:

“It was a real statement of character within the squad.

“We really asked the players to step up and we really deserved to win.

“Big positives from today.

“The leaders within the group set the tone… Jamaal Lascelles, Kieran Trippier, Matt Ritchie.

“They make sure that we don’t surrender.

“If you are disjointed and go away from your principles, you will be in trouble.

“We try to be us.

“Jamaal Lascelles has been incredible behind the scenes and you want to see that rewarded in the right way.

“He has been patient and is now performing really well.

“The goal [to make it 2-1) was a massive moment in our season.

“Gordon’s cross was pinpoint and the header was perfect.”

Eddie Howe on the performance of 17 year old Lewis Miley:

“I haven’t come across many 17 year olds at his level.

“he is a very good athlete, strong, a good size.

“The biggest compliment I can give him is the pass for the first goal.

“An incredible decision and he has the right temperament.

“A lot of young players would have wanted to shoot there.

“We have high hopes for him.”

Love the bloke to bits but I think he could have made 3 changes tonight in the last 10 minutes to stop the play and break momentum and chose not to. Having kids on the bench is one thing but to their inexperience is irrelevant when the clock's on 91 mins etc. Subbing those 3 players on could have killed the play for 30 seconds or so at a time. Not saying it could have prevented the bullshit pen but it could also have panned out differently too

Should have brought Dummett on for Isak in stoppage time.  He fucking loves defending, would've been in his element.

Aye. I thought Hall and Dummett should have came on. Isak was a statue towards the end and we were that deep and not bothering with the press or trying to counter. An extra defender would have helped.

Hard to criticise him or any of the players, mind.
