The 28 year-old Tynesider is a free agent after his deal with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell expired and returns to the club he played for as a schoolboy. Released by Newcastle aged 16, Gillespie joined Carlisle United and made his senior professional debut for them in May 2010. Spending time on loan at Blyth Spartans the following season, Mark returned to Brunton Park to feature regularly before moving on to Walsall in 2017. After a year at the Saddlers he made a free transfer switch to Motherwell and spent two years at Fir Park, latterly playing alongside loan Magpie Rolando Aarons. Gillespie's imminent arrival increases speculation that Karl Darlow's time on Tyneside is drawing to a close, while raising question marks about the future of Freddie Woodman.
