I think I can remember a brief spell when Boro were more of a rival in football terms. Was it 90s/early 2000s? Has been fierce off the pitch. Was one of the worst places you could go through the years but could never class them as our No1 local rivals. Good to beat them but I don't mind them doing well tbh. They probably don't feel the same towards us of course but hey ho. Most of the smoggies I've met, on holiday etc have been sound.

I think I've already said on another thread but Boro away in the 80's was the most threatened I've ever felt at any away ground. Sitting in the back of a van being rocked at traffic lights 1 midweek game man. 😬

It's another case of them being more bothered about us then themselves, remember their UEFA cup run to the final (credit where credit's due from McClaren for that) and their main chant/song was something like "Geordies at home watching the Bill" - so was quite amusing to find 1000's of geordies signing up on their biggest forum as characters from the Bill and giving them shit, the night of the final as they were getting dicked

Just looking at that picture of Ayresome Park, for the league cup tie in 92 with the away end closest to camera, it had to be one of those alleyways of the houses lined up behind that on our way there a bloke in front of us was hooked in for a beating, like being fished off a stage, so effeciently that it was obviously old hat. He wasn't wearing any colours that I recall and wouldn't surprised if it was a case of any old port in a storm.

Sunderland was sheepish by comparison.

 

Don't even dislike Boro and retrospectively think were it not for being in the same region for local news (back in the day a Boro bias was detectable) and then the Legends on Century there wouldn't have been a rivalry at all at our end. Played them 14times in my first five years going and not at all in the last 14 helps.

It tends to build a bit when we’re in the same division, but that’s happened once in the last decade and a half.  It’s not that there is nothing to it - but it’s just so far away from being a derby with any real sentiment for it.  I’d still look for the Mackems’ results in the third division from time to time - I haven’t looked for a smoggie scoreline since we were both in the same division.

3-1 win ? We went by car and it was quite sedate by Boro standards though we heard some tales.

 

Early 80s however had echoes of Newcastle V Chelsea of that time.

I remember watching Look North early 80s when KK was here and they beat us 3-2 I think it was, I was at the game but the next night's news summed it up with the highlights with some middle aged middle class woman saying "I dont care if we get relegated so long as we beat them tonight". Remember it clear as day.

I’ve only got two smoggie mates, but both of them very much identify themselves as Yorkshiremen - and one claims Leeds is their main rival.  Another case of unrequited love / hate I reckon.

That’s changed in recent years, probably due to the fact we’ve been in the same division as them more often than not the past decade.
