Just this:

"Ashworth, we understand, also disclosed details to Berrada of the agreement between Newcastle and Brighton that took him to St James’ Park in the summer of 2022. This would likely be a breach of confidentiality to each of Newcastle and Brighton."

Did they actually think with this information they would just then need to offer us what we did Brighton and they'd get him?!!! [emoji38]

Would be fucking hilarious if Newcastle have been feeding him lies in the time before  he gave notice and hes been reporting it all back to man U like the devious little rat that he is, not realising none of it is true.

The only thing in Ashworths favour here is that it’s a good day to bury footballing bad news?

What a silly cunt. Opened up Man United and every approach they’ve made to any personnel to so much scrutiny it’s untrue. Be highly surprised that legal action isn’t taken here by all 3 clubs involved. Ratfink thinking he operate any which way he wants - that’ll soon change.

The 20 million offer was likely influenced by this knowledge, maybe we said pay it and you don't end up in court.

Blairite Corbynista Burnham will be on the case desperately trying to impress the masses in Manchester. I’m sure he’ll be outraged on both sides of the city divide.

Passing it on to try and determine Man Utd’s own compensation payment via baselining it v what we paid Brighton. Exactly what he’s after at arbitration. Hope we pull the rug out on that. And then Brighton and City wade in.

I’ve gone from being utterly non-plussed by Ashworth - he just came across as a delegator to me - to being overjoyed that he’s leaving.

Still don’t know why he’s so highly rated. My suspicion is that there are a lot of fucking stupid people in football for whom a reasonably competent administrator appears to be a magician.

Compared to Lee "thumbheed" Charnley he probably did seem like a magician

Can someone get the full story from The Times? Tried the usual tricks of cancelling loading and using Reader but they’ve got wise to this. Headline runs with “Ashworth error could cost Man Utd millions” which is always pleasant.

Loving the fact Rat Cafe haven’t picked up on the fact he’s emailed details of his previous confidential compensation agreement to his prospective employer to use in negotiations against his current employer whose tech and infrastructure he’s sending it from. That’s not anyone’s idea of a professional. Well, maybe a professional arsehole.

It’ll be great when we likely get Freedman in place and can crack on. I’m glad Ashworth has gone now, hopefully his blunder gives us even more cash.

The whole affair has made Ashworth and Man U look ridiculous.

An email that Dan Ashworth sent to himself about being approached by Manchester United could be crucial in the forthcoming arbitration against his former club Newcastle United.

Ashworth, who is still being paid his salary of more than £1 million a year by Newcastle despite being on gardening leave for three months, emailed the incoming Manchester United chief executive, Omar Berrada, making it clear that he wanted to accept an offer to become the club’s sporting director after the pair had held a conversation in early February.

In doing so, he sent a blind copy to his own Newcastle email address. Club staff were therefore aware of that message when Ashworth, their sporting director at the time, revealed to them that he wanted to talk to officials at Old Trafford about taking up a post there.

The email sent to Berrada by Ashworth also went to the sporting director’s Newcastle address

The Premier League’s rules state that each club and director should behave towards each other with the “utmost good faith” and it could be a breach if they were to “act dishonestly towards another club or engage in conduct that is intended to circumvent these rules”.

It is felt this information could now be crucial in swinging the pendulum in favour of Newcastle before the arbitration that Ashworth and Manchester United hoped would help to facilitate his move to the club. It had been due to start at the end of this month.

The Times can reveal that Manchester United have so far offered about £2.5million to end the 53-year-old’s gardening leave and allow him to begin his new job this summer but the clubs remain some distance apart.

That is less than Newcastle paid Brighton & Hove Albion when they took him to St James’ Park in June 2022. It is thought that Ashworth disclosed details to Berrada, who is also on gardening leave and will begin his position at Old Trafford after a move from Manchester City on July 13, of the agreement that took him to Newcastle. That could be a breach of confidentiality.

Ashworth’s gardening leave in his contract with Newcastle is due to run until October next year. Newcastle are still open to negotiation to end the impasse but want a figure of about £10 million.

Newcastle’s desire is for the figure to reflect Ashworth’s worth, what the club paid Brighton and also what he has received in salary and bonuses since taking up his position at St James’ Park.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United’s new minority shareholder, was critical of Newcastle’s stance in February. He said then: “I think it’s a bit silly, personally. What I do think is completely absurd is suggesting a man who is really good at his job sits in his garden for 1½ years.”

Manchester United declined to comment on the story.

Embarrassing that.

Manchester United are at risk of a tapping-up investigation after Newcastle United discovered emails suggesting Omar Berrada secretly wooed Dan Ashworth in early February.

Incoming chief executive Berrada was still serving his period of gardening leave at Manchester City when Ashworth copied a message intended for him to his own account at Newcastle.

The email, discovered in recent weeks by Newcastle, was sent weeks before Ashworth told executives at the north-east club that he wanted to stand down as director of football to join Manchester United.

Such approaches without permission from the target club can prompt investigations from authorities, but it is understood no official complaint has been made to either the Premier League or the Football Association yet.

Instead, there is a growing expectation that Newcastle will instead use their proof of contact three months ago as leverage to force Manchester United to pay the compensation they are looking for. The email blunder by Ashworth, who appears to have sent the message to himself by blank carbon copy, could also land United in trouble with City, given Berrada was still officially on the rival club’s staff.

In the email, Ashworth is also said to have disclosed details to Berrada of the confidential agreement Newcastle struck with Brighton to bring him to the north-east in 2022. Both United’s declined to comment, but multiple sources confirmed a report, first detailed in the Daily Mail, that Ashworth sent an email CCing his Newcastle account to Berrada’s Ineos account.

The message is said to “make it clear” he wanted to accept the opportunity of becoming Manchester United’s sporting director. Ashworth, 53, has been on gardening leave since stepping down as Newcastle’s sporting director on Feb 18, having informed the Tyneside club he was interested in a move to Old Trafford.

The email discovery will only serve to heighten tensions behind the scenes, with The Telegraph reporting three weeks ago how Ashworth was set to take Newcastle to arbitration in an attempt to force through the move amid an increasingly acrimonious stand-off. Initially, Sir Jim Ratcliffe offered just over £2 million as compensation, which was dismissed out of hand.

Newcastle are seen as likely to be willing to compromise on initial demands of £20 million, however. One source said the email showing Ashworth was tapped up dramatically strengthens Newcastle’s hand although legal options will also be looked at. Ashworth declined to comment when contacted by The Telegraph.

The Old Trafford hierarchy feel their approach for Ashworth is no different to the way Newcastle pursued the former Football Association technical director when he was at Brighton and have been surprised by the Tyneside club’s financial demands.

Privately, United, who are operating to a tight budget this summer, feel that the extra £10 million-plus it might take solely to shorten Ashworth’s gardening leave would be better invested in playing talent. Ratcliffe has been critical publicly of Newcastle’s positioning and their determination to hold Ashworth to the full length of his gardening leave, which is thought to run until late next year, unless their demands are met in full.

Speaking in February, Ratcliffe, who has assumed complete control of football operations at United as part of his £1.3 billion deal for a 27.7 per cent stake in the club, said: “I think Dan Ashworth is clearly one of the top sporting directors in the world, I’ve no doubt. “He’s a very capable person. He’s interested in the Manchester United job because it’s probably the biggest sporting director job in the world just now, with the biggest challenge. “We’ve obviously had words with Newcastle.

They would clearly be disappointed to lose Dan. But what I do think is completely absurd is suggesting a man who is really good at his job sits in his garden for one and a half years.” Ratcliffe suggested Ashworth’s gardening leave term expires next year. United separately appointed Jason Wilcox as technical director last month.

The Premier League rule book states that each club, director and official should behave towards each other with the “utmost good faith” and it would be a breach if they were to “act dishonestly towards another club or engage in conduct that is intended to circumvent these rules”.

I'd be demanding the exact fee Man Utd were looking for from us to take Lingard on loan. (£2.5m then £12m on survival)

Do the same, £2.5m up front then £12m at the end of the 24/5 season for staying in the Premier League.

Sort of like when Hitler had the 1940 Armistice signed in the same place as the 1918 one.
