New contract with an extra £50k a week for 12 months, leaves next summer for £120 release clause. He comes out and tells everyone a lot of the talk has been internet nonsense and it was all out of his hands. We sign Wissa as his backup for this season. Bish bosh.

Why would we want to lock ourselves into paying him more and selling him for less? No upside for us at all.

Apart from having him play for us for another season.

The fear is, we'll get the Isak we had in the last 8 games of the season.

We all thought he was injured, but maybe his performances, or lack thereof, was a reflection of him being completely checked-out mentally.

Nah, he'll not want to tarnish his reputation with the elite clubs around the Europe.

Lets him save some face, win some kudos back with the fans and keeps him a bit happier and banging them in for another season hopefully.

If he does stay then perhaps getting him involved in one of the friendlies to let whoever feels inclined to get their boos out the way and then we can start a fresh when the season starts [emoji38]

Although realistically, even if he did stay I know he's gonna be "injured" until atleast 1st September.

Said it before said it again. Fuck that. We absolutely should not reward him for this shit show and we absolutely should not limit what we could get for him. He’s not deciding to now stay out of goodwill he’s potentially staying because  Liverpool massively underbid for him

at this point I’d be very much against a new contract and a release clause

It’s a World Cup season. Absolutely no chance.

Best case scenario is we come to an agreement that we’ll spend the coming season finding him a proper suitor that makes him happy but also doesn’t see us getting raked over the coals. Realistically, he’s not going to down tools for a season and we can’t afford to banish him to the reserves.

Only other stipulation I’d add is that we are not, under any circumstances, selling him to Liverpool.

Or get him to stick to his contract and sort himself out, and emphasise that we won’t sell him below our valuation for him. And the better he performs, the more suitors he will have who would pay us what we think he is worth.

Thinking about this more, I reckon the club has actually played this whole ordeal pretty well.

They've said all along that Isak has stayed at home "due to a small injury", and kept quiet about all the noise and speculation that's been in the media, meanwhile standing firm that should an offer come in he's not for sale.

Now that an offer has officially been placed and then instantly and firmly rejected, we can integrate Isak back into the squad with the fullback that he wasn't with the squad due to said injury.

Even if it's all platitude, as everyone knows what Isak and his agents have done, the club have from their point of view, saved face for themselves and protected the player.

They've made Liverpool look like twats in the process too, which is always lovely to see.
