We used to say they had 12 shots, 4 on target and no goals. If all of those shots were shite punts 25 yards out, even the ones on target, those 12 shots are pretty meaningless. All xG tells ya is whether they had meaningful goal-scoring opportunities. Used in combination with shot stats and other crap, you can build a picture of how the team performed.
