Rafalove
You can’t just blame var, either. Players are given very little freedom. Flair players are studied endlessly, and teams are good at finding ways to stop them. Everyone nowadays are compact. No wide open spaces between defence-midfield-forward. Nothing will ever come close to those Man Utd - Arsenal games with Vieira v Keane, Keown v Van Nistelrooy etc I don’t think this is true. There’s a fair amount of footage of elite teams of that era just knocking it long back and forth and heading the ball. And that game where Man U beat Arsenal to end their streak would cause uproar today. Literally a dozen awful decisions. 3 or 4 terrible fouls. Dives not spotted. In retrospect that was a screw job. In terms of pure quality of football. The Pep era and the teams that stopped or challenged them was the best - across Europe. That Barca side, the Madrid Mou to Carlo era, City, Klopps teams etc. A lot of the football prior wasn’t as good as nostalgia has people believing. Elite playwrs are also now compared to Messi and Ronaldo. And a lot of the best players just aren’t appreciated. Vini Jr is what 25? His highlight and big moments reel is superb. Neymar’s entire career is disrespected. He doesn’t have the international success but his club career he was largely supreme for a long time. Constantly disrespected. Vini is disrespected. We don’t enjoy good things.
TheInfiniteOdyssey
Quite a few thoughts on this, but surely Eto’o must be on this list!?
Kid Icarus
Klose on the list but no Rooney, Eto'o, Aguero, Van Nistlerooy, Schevchenko ...surely Ronaldo qualifies as a CF too? Suarez is easily number 1 or 2 on that list imo. He's going to very quickly become one of the most underrated players going because he's a cunt and played in the Messi era alongside him so was overshadowed. Ronaldo is the best CF that was still playing in the 21st Century, but his best was late '90s not in the 21st century. Shearer scored more goals in top 5 european league football in the 21st century than Ronaldo Nazario. Just saying.
Kid Icarus
Quick stab at it 1. C. Ronaldo 2. Suarez 3. Lewandowski 4. Benzema 5. Kane 6. Ronaldo 7. Ibrahimovic 8. Aguero 9. Haaland 10. Villa
TheInfiniteOdyssey
For me it’s something like: 1. Suarez 2. Rooney 3. Lewandowski 4. Aguero 5. Kane 6. Cavani 7. Benzema 8. Ronaldo Nazario 9. Haaland 10. Eto’o Probs a massive cop-out on my part not considering C. Ronaldo as a centre forward tbh. Ronaldo Nazario’s peak was arguably in the 90s, but had a few more wonderful goal-scoring in the early 2000s. Undoubtedly one of the most gifted players to ever grace a football pitch though. Falcao at his (too short a) prime is perhaps the best number 9 (apart from Ronaldo) I’ve ever seen. He was something else.
KennyUtd
Klose and Kane ahead of Shearer. Fuckin lemons.
Kid Icarus
In the 21st Century Kane is undoubtedly ahead of Shearer like. Overall, not for me as a striker.
KennyUtd
Prime Shearer playing for this Bayern side would be ridiculous numbers. Can't imagine what his stats would be like at City. Outrageous.

alexf
Klose's world cup goals record (still the leading scorer?) does alot of heavy lifting for this reputation I suspect.

It's been 16 years since the team that finished 6th won the play offs, how are they expecting the team finishing 8th to do? Plus if they fluke it they'll get fucking pummeled in the prem, it's rare enough for the Champions to stay up.
