In the EFL's defence, could they have done much more?

The information only came to light recently,  Southampton only got to the final a week ago and they'd have to ensure all the legal ramifications were solid so they don't get sued to pieces by Southampton

Aye, and much as I understand why Hull are putting forward the argument they're putting forward, the second leg of the other semi final could've been delayed for any number of reasons too, which would have put them at the same competitive disadvantage of having less time to prepare.

I'm not sure the argument really holds up. They knew they were preparing for one of two teams and they knew the circumstances, failing to rearrange the pre-planned day off just seems like stupidity on their part, as does only planning to face a team that you know have cheated and are at serious risk of being kicked out.

The whole thing has been made much easier for them by Southampton basically admitting (seemingly) everything. They aren’t contesting the charge, just the punishment.

Also I’m not a lawyer but if Southampton sued would it not open them up to having to hand over even more potentially incriminating evidence that they have already admitted to. Admitting to what they’ve been caught doing could just be away of avoiding deeper digging.

The punishment is the hardest thing for the EFL to decide on though and that's where the legal stuff all comes in?

It's not a decision that can be made within a day

I'd also be surprised if Southampton only spied on 3 opponents, at various times in the season and one of them being Oxford. Just doesn't make much sense

also very suspect the run they went on and the only 3 times they admitted to spying the failed to win

I feel like the fairest thing, though would suck for Hull and those wanting West Ham or Spurs down, is just that only two come up from the Championship and only two go down from the Prem. That or replay the whole play offs, including Wrexham instead of Southampton, obviously they won't do that due to time and Hull did beat Millwall.

Hull have only qualified for the final, they've not actually earnt promotion, so sending them straight up isn't fair, Middlesbrough lost their semi final, so they haven't earnt a final place. Southampton are thrown out.

Club Statement

20 May 2026

Heart of Midlothian Football Club would once again like to thank our incredible supporters for their magnificent backing throughout this season, and to provide an update in relation to the events which unfolded at Celtic Park on Saturday.

As previously noted, the Club is investigating events before, during and after the match, and will offer Police Scotland our full support as they continue with their enquiries.

We have also written to the SFA and SPFL setting out our observations and questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the premature ending of the match, and expressing our concern that a troubling precedent has been set whereby a pitch invasion can effectively determine the duration of a football match, rather than the match officials. We have asked them for a prompt response to the points we have raised.

The incursion of spectators onto the field of play must never be condoned under any circumstances, and the seriousness of the potential consequences must be fully understood by supporters and clubs alike.

We are aware of highly irresponsible comments made publicly this week, which appear to seek to defend those who entered the pitch on Saturday and undermine the gravity of the situation. Those remarks carry dangerous implications, and we call upon the football authorities to ensure that this matter is addressed with the seriousness it demands, and with the full cooperation of all involved.

This has been an excellent season for Heart of Midlothian. However, it represents only the very beginning of our plans for long-term sustained success. We look ahead to next season with confidence, supported as ever by the exceptional backing of our fans, sponsors and partners.

Football is won and lost on the pitch.

Unless there's match fixing or something, maybe criminality - i'm not really into this type of action.

Then teams will keep spying on other teams, if it's low risk high reward. Southampton may never have been in the final, or even the playoffs (who knows), if it wasn't for spying on other teams.

If football is won and lost on the pitch, why are they out there spying, knowing that it's against the rules?

I don’t see the problem. The EFL should throw the appeal out, reduce the points deduction to 2 points and also tell Hull to shut up.

Soton should reimburse their fans if they’re going to be out of pocket, the players can fuck off if they try arguing loss of earnings against the club. Harwood-Bellend should be mocked endlessly by fans of every club next season.

They've had all week to decide what they're going to do. They've discussed nothing else, why would an appeal change any of the facts that brought them to their original decision? They've admitted the breaches and this is the punishment, get on with it. Reject the appeal immediately and let Hull and the mutants play it out

One thing is for sure, the EFL will be sweating nervously in the event of Boro winning the playoffs. Be legal cases galore that a team got promoted despite being knocked out over two legs already - Could see Hull, Wrexham, Millwall perhaps, Spurs/West Ham all kicking up a fuss.

EFL will be desperate for Hull to win

Other than the fans, it's very difficult to have much sympathy for Southampton. It happened multiple times across the season with Spor having knowledge of it, suggesting it was accepted practice within the football operation.

The Hull argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny either
