Pot 4 again? We’re about to become every team’s Pot 4 nightmare.

It means a lot less now. Each club gets 2 fixtures from each pot including their own, one home and one away.

It means a lot less for us, we can’t play ourselves, but we are clearly the best team in Pot 4, and should be in Pot 2/3.

I fancy us for top 5 again, hoping that's all CL again. I think it should be the same top 5 teams as last season.

ManU don't look like they'll have improved enough to challenge it. Tottenham will do better, and could be the main challenge, but I think bridging that gap will probably be too much.

Early evidence is that Villa will not be matching/doing better than last season. Forest won't be a threat. Chelsea look similarly inconsistent but will prob have enough.

I reckon if we keep close to last season's level, maybe a bit below, we should finish top 5. If we can manage that alongside a CL campaign, that'll be progress.

Andy Brassel predicted on a pod before the season, posisbly true faith, that we would win the europa league in the next 5 years, hard to see us getting back in the CL n current form but still early days, Chelsea still have same problems and reasonable chance it wuld go to top 5 again, agree Man U still off it and Spurs better but not amazing.  Real chance for someone else to be this years Forest.

Got my doubts we'll finish in the European places through the league anyway. The CL games are take their toll, the transfer window was poor  and we're unlucky with injuries. Wouldn't be the worst think not qualifying IMO. Long as we can keep hold of our best players and add some quality, I'd be fine with it.

My only worry missing out on Champions League last season was Isak wanting out, and we’ve lost him anyways. Give me a Europa run all day next season, even if it’s conference.

I’ve done a predictions chart for us again in terms of where we should pick-up points if we are on course for a top six finish (taking into account difficulty of opposition and whether home or away etc.). No point posting it as suffice to say, and as everyone can see, we are way off the pace. I’ll share it if we have an upturn.

Aye big win today. Got two games coming up too that we only took 1 point from last season.

Id still bet on us to finish 5th. Who’s going to finish above us? Last seasons top 4 - aye probably. But who else? ManU, Villa? Possibly but don’t think so. Palace or Bournemouth maintain it over a season? Could do but don’t think so. Tottenham? Prob the best chance but wouldn’t bet on it - also have CL to deal with.

That felt big today. League table doesn't really matter at this stage, but staying in touch with the top 4-6 even this far out was important.

Absolutely. Previous Howe seasons we've had 8 (10th), 12 (8th), 12 (7th) and now 9 points (11th) after 7 games so considering all the disruption we faced this summer, it's not a bad start really.

It’s going to be open for fourth again I think as Chelsea have been patchy, despite a good result yesterday. Not worried about man united at all, spurs are a bit better but we should be finishing above them.

Spurs definitely look like they'll be a nuisance. Getting good results with a stinking injury list.

As far as the Uncle Jeff coefficient (like for like games), we are currently -5 for last season. (Leeds take Leicester’s place)

+1 Villa away

-1 Liverpool home

-2 Leeds away

-3 Arsenal home

The rest even.

So win the next two and we’d be back even. Also big chances to make up in home games v Brighton, Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth.

I'm trying not to dwell on it too much, but getting to the CL knockout rounds and also qualifying again would be transformative for both finances and the perception of the club. And I think we're capable of both if we can just keep most of the squad healthy.

Would be absolutely monumental if this happened, it's exactly what all these shitey rules were brought into stop - a non big 6 club being consistently in the CL spaces

I just really hope it's 5 clubs that get CL again this year

Assuming Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City have the top 3 nailed

Chelsea should be next best with their depth and quality. They pipped us the last 2 years, despite them never really actually looking better than us across the seasons, so who knows. I think Howe is much better than Maresca

After that, I'd say it's us, Villa and Tottenham. We all have Europe. If we can get our attack going and don't struggle without Hall/Tino, I'm hoping we can get to 65 points or so with good cup runs and make it

That 5th spot is wide open. Top 4 is wrapped up imo. Too much strength in depth.

From what I've seen so far this season I don't think so. Liverpool, City and Arsenal sure, but the rest aren't some sort of an inevitably that can't be finished above.

Spurs and Chelsea are both doable.

The top three are probably locked in, but the fight from fourth down looks to be between us, Spurs, Chelsea, possibly Villa, and maybe a surprise team like Palace. I reckon a good season for Man Utd will see them finishing somewhere between 7th and 10th.

Assuming we have enough PSR headroom, especially with the money from the Isak sale, we should realistically be able to spend around £150m net next summer, right? If that’s the case, there’s no reason we can’t start closing the gap. Our best XI isn’t far off in quality from sides like Arsenal; the bigger issue is squad depth and overall balance.

There’s a point of diminishing returns with these teams having quality (but bloated) squads- only so many players can feature regularly- so if we get a relatively clean bill of health next season, there’s a path to bridging that gap more quickly than people think imo.
