We're all just waiting for the Howe click really. In the grand scheme of things our position is fine.

Weirdly I was more worried last season when we were on 12 points at this stage because the football was worse than this despite the results, then we had a run of playing well but not getting the results.

Results match our performances for the most part at the moment I think, but I'm confident that when it finally clicks we'll go on another run.

We're a point ahead of 22/23 btw.

It's not the points which are the main concern for me. Like I said, I just don't see the forward line clicking, and I said this before the game as well. I don't even know how Woltemade has got 4 goals, he seems to score with basically the only chance he gets.

He's not the problem though, the wide forwards are not running off him at all.

Said in Brighton tread, top 4 will be same as last season. All same managers, all strengthened their sides and at worse will remain same level.

5th is anyone’s, and unless we sort our shit out quick, we’ll fumble that. Bournemouth and Palace look very capable of being this seasons Forest / Brighton, so top 7 will be a slog.

Isak money could be going towards a write off season and having no Europe next season and coping with the rise in wages from new deals.

More concerned than when Harvey Barnes was bailing us out this time last year? Howe will light a fire under them like after Brentford away imo. Today I think it's on Howe tbh, but the forward line need to do better.

Weirdly I think both Woltemade and Murphy are doing their jobs properly but are letting each other down a bit. Murphy's putting in great balls Woltemade should be getting on, Woltemade's scoring and doing excellent hold up play Murphy should be running off. There's a lot of everyone coming short.

Biggest issue this season is that the competition is a lot stronger. I'm not sure we'll have anywhere near the leeway that we had with our inconsistency in previous seasons.

If we can't figure out a way to become a goal threat we'll struggle for top 7, you can't rely on clean sheets to carry you at this level.

Why is the Brentford game last season the hope we improve after today? Last season, we were hooking up good games, then poor, before playing two proper shit teams where we racked up the goals.

This season, we’ve not been good once, bar Liverpool second half, when we had a chip on our shoulder and a nothing to lose mentality after going 2-0 down.

Based on so far, people are sticking their fingers in their ears if they think they next 3 will suddenly be three wins on bounce.

Meh, the points tally for 4th will be circa 70 points as per.

Second sentence is the main point though. We aren't getting close to 70 points if we continue to average less than a goal a game.

I just don't see the goals in this side until Wissa is back to offer us something different. By that time we could be well off the top 5.

The goals will come, we're making chances. We just on a dry spell and the team is adjusting to Nick.

Top 5 is 65 points minimum. We will be there about I'm sure. 60 points is the least Howe has had in a full season for us.

The football is poor IMO. It feels like the only time we are dangerous is when we are throwing players forward in desperation, and then we are just as likely to get caught on the break when it breaks down. Our most fluent performance was against Bradford by a country mile, but that's like Anthony Gordon tearing up shit teams when he's playing for England.

The drop won't be like Spurs or Man Utd's, but can see it being a midtable season.

It all seems a bit bland and stale.

It doesn't take much to get into the top 8 really just some good runs in the team. At some point the league cup and Champions League will stop too and we can focus on the league.

Not that it works like this, but I'm bored, so I thought I'd see how we did in these fixtures in our previous three seasons, plus how we started.

22/23: 4th

Points from the same fixtures - 9

Points from first eight - 11

23/24: 7th

Points from the same fixtures - 9

Points from the first eight - 13

24/25: 5th

Points from the same fixtures - 15

Points from the first eight - 12

So we're not a mile off our usual kind of results. Running to the end of January, we have...

Fulham (H), West Ham (a), Brentford (a), City (H), Everton (a), Spurs (H), Burnley (H), Sunderland (a), Chelsea (H), Man United (a), Burnley (a), Palace (H), Leeds (H), Wolves (a), Villa (H).

So even with European commitments, I'd expect us to be putting a run or two together over this period.

So we are -6 in the Uncle Jeff (same fixtures as last season)

Let's say it's the same top 4,  and we're looking at our likely rivals for 5th:

Villa are -5

(having finished on same points as us last season)

Tottenham are +4

(having finished 28 points behind us last season)

Man U are  -1  (updated after ManU match)

(having finished 24 points behind us last season)

Can't discount likes of Bournemouth, but those clubs don't seem to last the distance.

We need to improve and we're not looking good to push on to a higher level, but we' can def still realistically put together a top 5 campaign.

Here's a chart which tracks where we should pick up points based on difficulty of opposition and whether home or away. The formula used (which ranks teams into 4 tiers based mainly upon where they finished last year) has been pretty accurate last three seasons. In short, even though we're sitting 11th we're basically not far away from being on track for 6th (2 points below). Which I think most of us would take given extra CL burden. Speaking of which, we're about three points below where we should be for a fifth place finish (not shown on chart).
