Kimbo Posted yesterday at 09:54 Share Posted yesterday at 09:54 (edited) We’ve just finished 12th and lost 17 league games in a season, and frankly there’s a justified pessimistic honk about the place, there’s zero chance of Anderson coming back here. Maybe in 2/3 seasons when Maresca has crashed Man City, if we’ve sorted ourselves out. Edited yesterday at 09:56 by Kimbo

He’s an elite water carrier who actually has good metrics for progressing the ball. He’s not super creative like a De Bruyne, or as clever in possession like Bruno and Bernardo Silva, but that’s an unfair stick to beat him or anyone with. Tonali has the occasional sloppy pass in him, agreed. Funnily enough, it has nothing to do with him being super creative, clever in possession or occasionally giving the ball away. The biggest issue is that when he plays alone in that deeper position, he has no urgency when we're in possession. He doesn't do a good enough job of finding spaces and making himself available for the ball and demanding it off the centre backs, he just sort of jogs back and forth and is easily covered or gets lost behind opposition players. So often we then see the wingers start dropping deep to get the ball because we can't get any progressive passing through midfield going to get them the ball higher up the pitch often enough. The wingers are then receiving passes in their own half with their back to goal in crowded areas, and everything breaks down.
KaKa Posted yesterday at 10:35 Share Posted yesterday at 10:35 1 hour ago, Shearergol said: Kinda pointless keepers making saves if the team ends up losing too I guess Why do people talk like we lost every single game? We didn't lose every single game, but the patterns of play were typically the same game after game. A lack of cohesion in possession where the midfield struggled to advance the ball, and a vulnerable defensive unit, often where the midfield was getting exploited. So yeah, Tonali has the legs to get around and make some tackles, but it's just not going to count for much if the main issue isn't sorted.

Hes likely about to sign for MC for 120m on 200k a week and even with Newcastle in his blood, he'd have to be the biggest moron alive to turn that move down. Hes also England's best midfielder in a generation, yes even better than Declan Rice and its utterly heartbreaking. I still have nothing but pride for what the lad is about to achieve. I personally think Rice is a level above. Anderson is a great all-rounder but his profile and attributes are kind of 'flavour of the month' due to the current tactical zeitgeist. Rice has that bit extra imo.
Geogaddi Posted yesterday at 10:38 Share Posted yesterday at 10:38 The way Tonali has hawed himself about the last few months tells me a lot about him and firms my belief even more that he only ever came here as he knew he was getting banned. Optimistic Nut Posted yesterday at 10:41 Share Posted yesterday at 10:41 I think Anderson is over-rated, would take Tonali any day, but if there was a possibility of bringing him home we need to do it. Need a statement signing to regain some momentum.

Curva Sud Milano Posted yesterday at 11:02 Share Posted yesterday at 11:02 Premise: You're right to sell Tonali. You may not be good at buying but you're the best in Europe at selling... Isak but especially Gordon were two masterclasses in transfers. Selling Tonali for 100 would be another great move, not because he's not worth it but because there's zero chance Howe will change his position on the pitch. Brescia, AC Milan, Italy, no one has ever deployed Tonali in that Pirlo-esque position, where he had to play as a playmaker and defend like a CB (In the previous season he played on the same line as Bruno and Joelinton). Sell him and have no regrets.

Probably just me and if it is then fair enough but for £100m I'm not going to lose any sleep, that'll be two players this window we'll have sold for more than we paid, three if hall goes and I suspect at some time soon, maybe Jan livramento will be on that list of us selling for more. I know we have to get better at spending but we're getting better at that side of things and that needed to happen.

SUPERTOON Posted yesterday at 11:22 Share Posted yesterday at 11:22 Just remembered, Howe made him captain towards the end of the season. It was right after the quite abont only wanting players who are committed to being here. Nicely thrown back in his face by Tonali.
