He was part of a defence that did keep a clean sheet there…

And isn’t that what team-work is about, everyone helping each other out when one of the players is being overran or beaten by someone who holds all the aces which Saka did that game and still would mostly in a 1v1 even against someone infinitely better than Burn.

Yeh that’s fine. Saka is a top player. But he was rinsing Burn and needed 2 team mates to stop him. Burn did not keep Saka in check like the person I quoted said.
I like Burn.  But he is a defensive weakness.  Not only 1v1 but we’ve conceded goals when he’s tried to anticipate getting rinsed and the players checked inside and scored or assisted. And he’s often the one sleeping on tight offside calls or being done against clever movement.

I like Burn. I even like his profile of being a defender first and foremost with height. But I think we can do better than him even with the same profile. Like an Akanji or Ake.

Was going to say the same - Saka would have run riot if we left Burn alone in that game. Somehow the opinion in this thread ranges from selling Burn to him shutting down every RW he's played against.

Aye. That statement was false. Is happily keep the profile of player but better. Obviously we shouldn’t sell Burn though.

Burn clearly can be upgraded but is invaluable for being able to ably play left back or centre back and a leader, he doesn't seem dumb enough to think more talented left backs won't come in ahead of him and that he will still be invaluable and the fans will still love him. He will continue to live the dream

Having said that it is always harsh to judge a full back for struggling against one of the leagues best players. Saka will cause the best problems.

Pretty sure he’s already said something along the lines of knowing the trajectory this club is on and what that might mean for him in the future, so he’s just enjoying the ride / dream come true.

It'll be interesting to see how our back line evolves under Howe.

Eventually, we'll buy a ball-playing keeper, but at present we need a sweeper to compensate for a chronic lack of recover pace in the back line. Teams started to target it in the second half of the season, by either trying to isolate Burn or exploit the space between Trippier and Schar.

I think we'll eventually end up buying athletic players at both LB and RCB. given Schar probably has a couple of years left in him, it's more likely Burn is upgraded this window.

Signing someone to be an upgrade on Burn rather than a proper out and out back would be interesting and frankly a bit of a surprise to me.

Not necessarily against the idea of having a LB who becomes more of a third CB when we're in possession, just don't expect that to be the route we go.

Isn’t the idea to improve ? Year on year ?

if we can’t find an upgrade on Burn I will eat my hat.

Don’t get me wrong burn had a very good season , but he needs competition.

Isn’t that the idea to have two good players in every position?

Schar needs competition too / upgrade

We are in the champions league / league / carabao cup / Fa cup

so everyone will get plenty of game time

We need upgrades / depth …no time for sentiment

Obviously might not be possible this window.

I meant the type of player.

I'd expect a left back who can get forward and do on the left for us what Trippier does on the other side.

If we go into the season with Burn the first choice LB I'll be stunned.

Yes but the trick is not to do it all in one window. Not all due to sentiment. Unless that comes under team spirit and moral and the squad being more than the sum of its parts.

I honestly feel after this window you’ll see less and less players added per window.

He'll have to this season. Tripper who turns 33 at the start of the season, 31 years old Schar & Burn won't be able to play all games in all competitions even if they manage to avoid injuries. Might as well get better technical players play the games where we need to break down low block teams.

33 and 31 are hardly pensioners like. Trippier will have at least another good season in him, and while we. do need cover for Schar, the reason we need a left back is because we need a specialised one of higher quality. Nothing to do with Burn's age. In fact you could argue Burn himself would be the cover for Schar if we got a top class LB in.

Ive really never heard of needing left footed and  right footed centre backs before the last couple of seasons.  Is it a new thing?  Im sure there must have been dozens of excellent centre back pairings who are both right/left footed

33 is pretty fucking old for a top flight player. Not rotating Trippier to keep him fresh would be extremely speculative by Howe imo.

There were 8 players who played in the PL at 33 last season. About half of them were regulars at teams and even less of them were playing in European competition.

There were 26 players 34 - 38 who had PL appearances last season. 6 of them playing regularly.

Trippier looked absolutely great last season, but generally speaking players are starting to decline heavily around this age. He should be preserved as much as possible. Risking him against a lower half PL team or lower league team in one of the cups before a CL match f.ex doesn't seem very smart to me.

Burn looked extremely fatigued at the end of the season. 1 year older and a ton of additional matches I can't see how he can play every game either.

But who says Trippier has to play every game next season? We have Krafth and Ashby as a young developing prospect. If Burn was that fatigued I'm surprised Howe kept playing him game after game even when Targett was fit. Targett who himself is a very competent LB by the way.

Burn has been fantastic. He's the third choice CB and levels above Jamal. He's also literally ginormous and that maters a lot, a great person to have in the squad and a massive presence on the pitch. We should definitely upgrade LB but he's an exceptional squad player and often a top first 11 player.

But also, can we stop talking about Dan Burn and Adam Armstrong now, this thread is supposed to be about transfer rumours.

Also take your meds, whoever brought them up.

Yes, that's my point  My initial post was a response to cuba mentioning that Howe doesn't rotate his defence unless absolutely necessary, which I think he has to this coming season.

I was surprised by Howe persisting with Burn in April.

I'd imagine it's pretty rare to have two left footed CBs as most left footed ones tend to play on the left. There's loads of right footed CBs that only play on the left too though. Terry was one, VVD now is the same. So two right footed ones will be alot more common but id say it's pretty common to have a 'left sided' CB in those partnerships just not necessarily left footed.

I'm left-footed and only played casually

but I had to play left-sided centre-back. I always felt awkward on the right-side it just didn't feel natural.

@Dr Venkman I'm sure you were a lefty too? Might have been Duffy. I remember when we'd play for the Reds v Blues or NOFC I'd always have to send you to the right because I couldn't do it. You were a boatload better than me but if you were it'd be interesting to see if it was the same for you.

Guessing because there's more right-footed players there'll be a lot more right-footed partnerships who've been used to playing LCB or ECB from a young age so it comes more naturally. I hated it though.

Basically, pass success is much higher if you have a left and right foot partnership.  So that's the optimum.  But you'd go for 2x quality players if a balance can't be achieved.

Used to be tackling too. Harder to tackle if your right footed and someone's slipped in to your left especially chasing back. Used to be a thing where you'd try and expose that.
